Just a quick question. Would a wedding photographer usually charge more if a wedding took place on a holiday?

Thanks in advance!

my personal philosophy has always been that I will charge enough to make it worth my while (so the short answer is yes). worth my while to spend my time with someones elses family instead of my own.

it depends on the holiday too. obviously there are a couple that I would never shoot a wedding on.

I suppose that it could be seen as a reason to jack the price upwards a bit.

Thank you both for your responses!

I was asked if i'd be interested in shooting my friends sisters wedding on July 4th. We met up, she viewed some of my prior work and decided that she'd like to have me photograph her wedding. We verbally agreed on a price however I neglected to factor in that fact that July 4th was a holiday. Now I am writing up the official "contract," would it be wrong to ask for more money at this point?

As you may probably gather from my ignorance, photography is not my profession and I am only really a hobbyist (at this point anyway).

if you've already told her a price then you can't go back on that without looking like a boob. especially since this is a relative of a friend. I would say just stick with what you originally told them.

Pretty much what I figured. It's not really a big deal, but when I got to thinking about it afterward missing out on the normal 4th of July festivities it makes me wish I had asked fore more. Maybe I'll still see some fireworks at the end of the wedding anyway!

Thank you for your input!

Nope, I wouldn't inflate my prices just because it's a holiday. If I didn't want to work that day I would turn down the job. If I wanted to work, I'd take it for my normal rates.

In my experience, 4th of July weddings usually incorporate fire works or end early enough for you to leave to enjoy them.

I wouldn't charge more. If I didn't want to do it, I'd turn it down. The 4th isn't a holiday that would be a deal killer for me. Hey - fireworks behind the couple? That would make some killer portfolio shots.

Perhaps you should have factored that into your fee before you actually quoted the job. How would that look if you came back with a higher fee on the written contract? Cue the screaming bride...

I kind of look at it as a 9-5 job where you get paid time and a half or double time for working a holiday.

yes I would charge more for a holiday, no your stuck with the price that you quoted them. When they asked if you wanted to shoot a Wedding on July 4th.....you needed to ask yourself if you wanted to and at what price. To me, if someone wanted me to shoot that day...I would say a highly inflated number to make it worth my while, I have no real intention to shoot that day...unless it's worth it to me!

I think that this is a personal decision one has to make but I would not charge more for working on a stat holiday. I wouldn't worry so much about surcharging for a specific day as I would in making sure that I am in the ball park on the price in general for the area you are working. I am sure there are some that are very busy and good that can take that approach to pricing. My questions is why would you want to charge more on the holiday, to me that is simply telling potential clients to look elsewhere, that you are pricing it so that you don't have to work that day.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.

like I said, what's the difference between me taking a job on a holiday and someone working an office job on a holiday? they're probably going to get at least time and a half. so why shouldn't I?

Honour your original quote.

It's the only fair thing to do.
