I see a number of sellers are attempting to get around paying the Paypal fees by asking the buyer to send the funds as a gift. My worry here would be that the buyer would probably have no recourse in case of a bad deal. If a buyer didn't get what was expected or it the product proved faulty, how could they expect Paypal to help out if it looks like they sent a gift of money? There would be no record of the it being a sale. I, for one, will not buy under those circumstance. I prefer a little protection when I buy something of value. Thoughts?

It's also a risk for the seller. There is no verified address in this situation and if the buyer is criminal they could be using a paypal account they are not authorized to use.

I do my B/S over at FM and the one time I accepted a gift payment was from a long time user. Of course that FM account could have been compromised but it wasn't for a lot of money.

Do a search for "paypal gift" in this forum and you'll find some interesting reading.

When i sell things, i always use the gift option because it makes it cheaper for both the seller and the buyer. Now, if i were to sell it as a regular, i would increase the price and include the paypal fee in the selling price. If you want some protection, have the seller send your item insured and shipped via signature confirmation.

Having seller ship insured and signature required really is protecting the seller, not the buyer.

How does insurance and signature confirmation protect against a seller not sending an item?

Never thought about that. I guess Paypal regular is the solution to all. Another solution is to deal only with established members who have multiple positive feedback.

Not a guranteed solution. Several years ago, I bought ink cartridges from a member of Ebay that had over 1600 feedbacks. The first 1400 plus were positive - then he started screwing people and the last 200 were negative, which I didn't catch. People can get desparate. ;)

In my opinion, using paypal gift for item transaction is no different than stealing, plain and simple.
I have no love for paypal, but if you use their service, it means you agree on their term which includes paying fee.

Really? How many times can you watch the same episode of an old TV show?

+1

I don't know why threads asking same q or telling the same scams keep popping? Just use the search feature instead.
