I'm going to be shooting an upcoming track day at the big track at Willow Springs. I'm planning on renting a great white prime so I can get some practice time handling one. I was thinking of renting either the 500 or 600 F4L IS. Any advice on which to try? I'm not at all familiar with the track layout so I don't know where the good vantage points are.

Depending on what you are shooting, 400 is too long. There are some turns that you need 500+ but I think you will end up with too much lens. Every time I have shot on the big track I use a 70-200 & a 400mm.

Outside turn 4 and inside turn 3 are good action corners, there is an elevation change and you can get shots of a line of cars coming out of 3 from 4.

Thanks. I'm going to be using a 70-200, a 300, and 1.4x/2.0x converters. So I should have my bases covered.
