Always throws me off when I switch lenses. I never understood why they design it like that.

Both are very good. The Canon's only real advantage is weather sealing, otherwise it is pretty much a wash. If you want weather sealing and a red ring, get the Canon, if you want to save $300, get the Sigma. chrisdscott wrote in post #12566554 The only issue I have with most Sigma zoom lenses is how it is the opposite direction from Canon glass to rack out from 24mm to 70mm. At 2.8 it is amazing. As is the Canon version which I have used on my friends camera. A great walk around lens for sure - though both are heavy. This is my dilemna now too, as this focal lenght will be my next purchase. I have some time to debate at least! 5D3 * 7D * Elan 7 * Canon 24-70 2.8/85 1.8/60 2.8/50 1.4 * D40x * Sigma 24-70 2.8 * Nikkor 35 1.8 *

BrandonSi Nevermind.. I'm silly. More info | Jun 10, 2011 14:02 | #11 I love my Sigma 24-70 (2.8 EX DG Macro). I've had it for ~4+ years now. I'm going to sell it closer to fall and replace it with a Canon 24-70L as I fell in love with that lens many years ago when I rented one. The L is sharper, especially at the larger apertures. When the sigma gets up around f/8 things even out, and you'd have to do some real peeping to tell it apart from the Canon. I would love to see a 3 way comparison of the 24-70L, EX DG, and then the HSM variant. Past Equipment | My Personal Gallery

I don't think I'd pay ~$900 for an HSM though.. At that point I'd take a used, known sharp 24-70L over a new HSM. Some people may not like the idea of used stuff though, which I can certainly understand.

They are not as prevalent as they used to be. I would definitely buy a 24-70 HSM used if it had a couple of years left on the warranty, and I expect that would be around the $800 range. Then again your lens has also gone up in price on the used market, so it may be a bit of a wash in your case. Oh, definitely.. I was implying if I was going to pay $850 for a new HSM, I'd rather pay $150-$200 more and pick up a 24-70L. That's just me though. People have a lot of great things to say about the HSM, so it wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people went route.
