Do most of you guys and gals use the G12 for all your shots, or do you also have DSLRs for your main gear. I'm considering selling all my gear and going with the G12. I have the 20D, 40D, Sigma 24-70 2.8, Canon 70-200 2.8 IS, 580EX, 2-YN-460-IIs, 5-PT-04TMs, 2 nice camera bags, backdrop stands and cross bar, 1-15"x15" softbox plus mount for the OCF, 3- White Lightning 1200s, plus stands, and a few extra gadgets. I originally bought all my gear, but I haven't really grossed much monies, and I could divert monies for other things. The G12 seems to be a good Point and Shoot to get, the reviews are pretty good. Maybe I;m just confused on what to do...........thanks in advance.....Stephen.

Keep the 40D, Sigma 24-70, 580, a bag and sell the rest. Grab a G. I think there are some that roll with just the G, but I think there are many that would agree the DSLR and the G will be nice to have in different situations. My 2 cents...

I mainly use my T1i, am thinking about moving to a 60d soon. I primarily bought my G12 to use diving but like how it performs in general and will take that with me when I want something much lighter.

Okay, I'm still on a 9, but I'm currently getting to know my 7D. That said...I'm quickly realizing that the G is the mobile unit and the 7D for when I need to serious.

Problem is I'm full of funny bones.

You are right - the G12 is a good point and shoot - comparing it to a DSLR is really apples and oranges, though.

Which might be the right choice for you depends on your needs, preferences, skills, budget, etc.

I was thinking along the same lines except, more specifically, of replacing my Canon 18-200mm lens with a wide-angle to telephoto point and shoot (I'm embarrassed to say that I don't even know if the G12 falls into that category).

Anyway, what I'm looking for may not be obtainable. I'd like to get something with image quality similar to the G12 (I've seen some great photos) but also have something with a huge focal range and still be small in size. To top it all off, I'd really like an optical viewfinder.

I guess I really ought to do some research on non-DSLR's.

Replacing my Canon 7D, Tokina 12-24mm, Canon 17-55mm, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.4, and 150-500mm with a Panasonic Lumix FZ1000. I still have the 17-55 and the 30 available for sale.

I mainly use the G11 went out with Dog and 7D at other times but always take the G11 - for shots when I don't want to change my lens on the 7D! ;)

If it moves, snap it - and if it doesn't move, snap it twice just in case it does move!

Well, I believe a DSLR will generally give you more control (i.e., ability to go very wide to very long) and perhaps better IQ than the G12. That said, I think the ultimate answer to your question depends on your photographic goal(s).

You shoot action events – 40D
You shoot primarily static scenes (landscapes, architecture) – G12
You like shallow depth of field – 40D
You like portability – G12
You shoot lots of party/casual pictures – G12
You make a lot of money with your camera – 5DmkII/1DsIII

Personally, when I am going out on a known photographic mission, I take my 5D and/or 50D. Anytime else I carry the G12. It’s in my commute to work bag and, therefore, always available if the need arises. That being said, I guesstimate that 75% of my photos are with the G12. It’s a great camera, and surely I could be very satisfied if it was my only camera.

But I'll always have a DSLR. I guess it's like waltrnewton said above, apples and oranges.

I'm not sure I'm exactly qualified to answer the question, but.... that has never stopped me before. <grin>

I only have the G12 for two reasons. The main reason is.... I'm a bit of a perfectionist and if I bought a DSLR camera, I would want to buy a good one plus the best glass available and all the expensive accessories. In years past, this would have been possible but is not an option at present. The second reason is that I really want a camera I can take with me all the time. So I fall into the category of wanting two cameras but only being able to afford one. (We were able to buy our youngest son a 5D with a few lenses back in 2006 and he's used it quite a bit professionally and loves it.)

I am enjoying the G12 a lot. I'm learning how to use it effectively with the help of shooting, reading a few books.. and this forum. Previously I used an A640.

I agree, keep the 40D and lens and get the G12. I have the 50D and G12 and they are both great cameras. I use the 50D for serious stuff and the G12 for street photography and family gatherings when I don't want to lug a big SLR. The G12 is great for candid shots and I love having video. I also carry it in my photo pack when I'm birding for the occasional landscape shot and I don't want to take my big lens off.
