I am just setting up my flash, following the first set of instruction for Fully Automatic Flash Shooting in P and Auto modes.

The manual says pressing the shutter button half way will cause "the maximum effective range of the flash will be displayed". see attachment.

The problem is that is doesn't. What does display on the top line is ETTL, and Zoom --mm with the Flash comp icon on the next line.

The 2 "_" characters; between Zoom and mm" appear to be placeholders for the values that are supposed to be displayed.

Could I have something set wrong?

Make sure your flash head is pointed straight ahead. Not up or not down. Not sure if it will effect this reading, but make sure the wide panel is pushed all the way back into the head.
