Not a catchlight or a rim light. LOL sorry. I'm having a brain fart as far as what I'm trying to describe.

If you look at Peter's (pnmd) lighting style, his back lights are somewhat round (of course he uses strobes with round head).
That's what i'm trying to achieve. (I tried adjusting the power output, adjusting the distance of the flash and adjusting shutter speed with no success)

Ok, so you want point lights back at the camera and see a round burst of light rather than an oval or elliptical shape?

So, it's called a "point light". :)

Yes, that's exactly what I like to achieve with a modifier with a speedlite.

Sorry. No, that was just a typo. I omitted the word "to".

It should have read "Ok, so you want to point lights back at the camera....?

I was just confirming that that is what you wanted to do?

The op is talking about lens flares. Actually, not even a lens flare....just a friggin strobe pointed at the camera. In this case, all you have to do it point the bare flash at the camera.

If you're not getting a round shape or the desired shape then you can use just about any modifier or bracket that accepts modifiers. If the only thing you're trying to do is to round off the shape of the light then you could probably use any cheap device off ebay.

That's the problem. I can't seem to find a round modifier / reflector type for speedlites.

That is why we mentioned the attachment 'beauty dish' for speedlights, or the Fong Lightsphere.

... or a Cool Whip container with a rectangular cut-out in the bottom to fit over the Speedlite head.

If all you want is the appearance of a bright white round hotspot in the photo, that would probably do it.

You've got to first get the packaging label ink off the top of the Cool Whip container, or you end up with a colored light source!

Heck, if I wanted to ghetto-fy (new word from me LOL) a round reflector, I would have gone to 7-11 and got me the largest cup and trim the size down with a lid over it. :)

But if all you want is a 4" round light source, no point in paying $70 to get that, when the 'ghetto-fy' works just as well.
A Folger's coffee can provides a larger diameter round source, if that's what you are after.

Michael,

If you're feeling like spending any real money then I would suggest you look at a device that will get you much more than what you need and presents the flexibility of using a hugh selection of modifiers with your Speedlite.

An example of such a device is the Cheetah Speed Pro bracket. It allows you to mount your Speedlite and use any accessory or modifier with a Bowens mount. The Bowens mount is incredibly popular and readily available.

Cheetah even sells a 7" reflector but you can go to B&H or ebay or anywhere you like. Use reflectors, speed rings and softboxes, beauty dishes, etc.

There are other brackets available but I own that bracket and can vouch for quality.
