Spent last week road tripping through the western U.S. Monument Valley was one of our goals to shoot, but a four-state sand storm kicked up with howling winds that day and opportunities to see anything, much less shoot, were limited. During a lull in the wind I managed to get this shot with my IR-converted XTi. I'm very happy with the moody, atmospheric gravity of the shot.

Indeed moody. Old photo impression also.

Very cool looking. What do you mean by IR-Converted? How is it infa-red?

Thanks for the kind words, folks!

CGunner, The Wife sent the XTi off to LifePixel a couple of months back for conversion. The "hot mirror" infrared blocking filter over the image sensor was removed and replaced by a 720nm pass filter, which blocks visible light and only lets the near-infrared spectrum through (which sensor are quite sensitive to). This is the scene as viewed in the near-infrared spectrum. The sky is much darker and there is a significant increase in the dust cloud details than in comparable visible light images we took. Also, the rocks formations have more contrast. I processed it as a black-and-white image, then converted it to duotone for the rich sepia look. But yeah, it's IR all the way. :D
