Quick question. I was first planning to get the sigma 85 1.4 as a wedding lens, but I heard so many good things about the canon 85 1.8. Do any of you guys use the 1.8 and can it be a very nice work horse during weddings? Thanks in advance.

Works good but massive purple fringing wide open and very bad with flare.

I use it every wedding. Its a great little lens- very light and versatile as a short tele lens. I don't find flare to be all that bad, but there is purple fringing wide open- mostly outdoors in the sun, if you stop down to 2.8-3.2 ish it gets much better.

I really like it.

Great lens, i didnt have the purple stuff tha others have mentioned. sold it to get the Sigma 85mm. As far as im concerned sigma 85mm is the best one in its class. I tested it against the canon 85L. virtually no difference except the price. If you can afford the sigma, get it. Better than the canon 85mm 1.8 at every stop.

That being said, i used an 85mm 1.8 for 4 years before i could afford to upgrade. There is no way the canon 85L is worth the price point its at when you put the sigma 85 against it.

Thanks! This was just want I wanted to hear. I plan on getting the 85 1.8 and get the 1.4 a few months down the road.

It fringes on crop, but hardly at all on FF. I'd go with the Canon on this one.

85 1.8 is half the price and it's a great lens. I recall having CA issues myself when I owned this lens before, however the Sigma also has some CA as does the 85L. Just the fact of life with these primes.

The 85 1.8 will have the best AF out of the three however.

Served me well a few months ago when my 70-200 2.8 wasn't fast enough inside the church.

As stated many times here though, purple fringing is fairly prevalent. If you are a pixel peeper you may go mad trying to fix it, even LR has a hard time.

But, lightweight, snappy AF and pretty darn sharp wide open! For the price, nearly unbeatable...

In another one of your threads you are talking about getting rid of your 70-200, so I would try a 135/2L instead of the 85/1.8 first to see if you really think you need wider. then get a 50/1.4 instead of your 50/1.8.

Not that you asked, but I have more fun (as in an easier time) working with my 50/1.4 images than my friend's 85/1.8 images when he shoots with me. and my 135 is on a different planet.

Excellent lens. Yes, it has purple fringes wide open, but so does the 85L, except it's worse on the L. At least, mine was worse. It is fantastic on crop or FF, I use it a lot on both.

Love my 85 1.8. Very fast auto focus. Sharp as a tack. Beautiful bokeh. These pluses far outway the purple fringe I sometimes encounter.
