I can barely think let alone type...

My brother just deleted three years worth of photos off my computer's desktop.

I was planning on moving them over tonight as I bought a new portable hard drive, but he decided to get on my system while I was at work and proceeded to delete everything, assuming I had saved it all.

Again, please...

I need help. I haven't slept, I can hardly think, and I'm ....I don't even know how I feel.

Please...please dont let this be the end. I don't know what I would do with myself.

You can recover deleted data from the hard drive, but for the moment don't do anything else with that computer. Just bring it in to a store and ask them to help you recover the lost files. Doing it yourself could lead to the files being permanently lost.

There are several program you can use to recover deleted files. My personal favorite is File Scavenger but there are others that are equally capable: http://www.quetek.com/prod02.htm (external link)

Did you look in your Recycle Bin to see if they are still there?

He already installed programs and deleted things...

I'm in tears and I can't think.

Grab a hold of yourself.

It doesnt matter if stuff was deleted or installed, if you compose yourself, think logically, and use the right tools you can get your files back.

A search for "file recovery" on a reputable download site generates a large list of potential solutions, (external link) many of which are free.

Another potential solution is Zero Assumption Recovery. (external link)

Actually it matters quite a bit, every time the space is filled with data (where the original files where) the chances is getting smaller to get a 100% recovery with intact file structure back.

Is it best to install this or take it to a professional?

Where can I go? Money isn't an issue. I'll pay LITERALLY ANYTHING to get this back. I mean that. I'll go without a car, without a phone, without anything I promise.

I will do whatever it takes...I will travel any distance....

I feel like im going to hyperventilate.

I know that...

Do you know of a professional? A governmental resource even? Anything?

Best is to use a professional data recovery service.

Some photos will be permanently lost since new software was installed.

Some photos should be possible to save, but it requires that no (!) more disk writes are done to that disk, since very single change may corrupt more data.

Yes, there are lots of data recovery tools out there. But even if they are good, they should be used by someone who have the skills. Alas, I have to assume that you do not, since you
1) created this thread.
2) didn't have multiple backup copies at different geographical locations.
3) didn't use user access settings to keep your things behind lock.

It really is paramount that data are not stored on a single disk or even at a single location. It will result in small or large losses. It's just a question of when. And the "when" is normally when it will hurt the most.

Professional help will cost. But you really have to go that route. Just downloading and/or installing a data recovery tool will destroy information on the disk. So download must be done on another computer and the recovery must then be done by either booting from a USB memory or CD, or connecting the disk (strongly recommended read-only) to another computer.

I know this very well; you aren't telling me anything I'm not aware of.

However, instead of over-emoting and handringing the OP can take simply steps to recover as much as possible. I suggested one approach at least 10 minutes ago which he hasn't even acknowledged.
