Let me use an analogy: A bike rider is traversing down a sidewalk with his helmet off and a car hits him. He suffers head injuries and dies.
Should he have worn a helmet? Absolutely. He could have saved his life if he had. However, the main problem is this: Why the hell was a car even ON the sidewalk?

No, the question is, Why was the Bike rider on the sidewalk? Bikes are considered VEHICLES, and as such, are legally restricted to streets, not sidewalks(at least in most jurisdictions). People who ride bicycles, (or skates or skateboards, or any other alternative mode of transportation) on sidewalks are committing a crime and should be treated as such. Just because you don't have, or like, cars, doesn't mean you are exempt from the rules.

Just a side note. Skaters and/or skate boarders are considered pedestrians in some countries.

Scott and PWM, you are both absolutely correct - I was just struck by the OP's analogy of a bike rider on the sidewalk. I thought it was a bad choice to illustrate his point. And then I got peeved while I wrote, thinking about some of the bike riders I've encountered who must believe they have the absolute right to pedal where ever and when ever they want without regards for the "rules of the road". And then we got WAAAY off topic.. :)

Sorry to take you guys away from the really interesting ongoing discussion about bikes, but..

I have a sneaky suspicion this company is going to charge him a fair amount, his files, recovered or not...

Restore from backup. Oh. Well, that's a hard one to learn sometimes, even harder to implement, not difficult, just harder to implement, case in point, here.

I sincerely dislike how this has turned into a circus and as a result, I'm officially seeing my way out of here.

Most of this was my fault, so I apologize to any I have annoyed or offended. I just want to get back to being a photographer.

Before I leave though, I want to thank EVERYONE who has posted *positive* messages encouraging me to carry on with my craft. I am grateful for such awesome advice and I will be remembering it in the future.

Farewell.

Alright. I thought I was done, but I MUST share this recent update with everyone. It is knowledge I think everyone should possess...
---------------

Kroll OnTrack Data Recovery has left me VERY unimpressed thus far.
Why do I say this?

A couple of reasons.

1. My assigned customer service representative is -frequently- away from her desk, which makes communication unnecessarily difficult.

2. More importantly, it appears that R-Studio completely destroys the recovery abilities allegedly possessed by the engineers at OnTrack. My Ontrack Verifile Report found NO FOLDERS on the desktop, which is where my files were originally deleted from. Instead, it seems to have found everything in a nondescript folder with equally vague file names. Thus, I can not personally identify what each image is.

(Of note: No .cr2 or .xmp files were found. Everything seems to be either a .tiff or a .jpeg, which is incredibly odd.)

These are definitely NOT the kind of results I was expecting. At worst, I figured that OnTrack would find the exact same things that R-Studio did. To pull up their report and find FAR LESS is just shocking. To add insult to injury, one of their representatives actually started to assume that I had written more data to the hard drive, which is simply impossible.

Before sending the drive away, I ran one last R-Studio scan just to ensure that it would find the same stuff it always has, and guess what? It did. I had the drive tested under Safe Mode with a USB inclosure, so there is no way that some MASSIVE overwrite took place right before my drive was shipped off.

To their credit, the recovery team is going to send me thumbnail versions of the files that they did find, so that should help a little bit in the identification process, but my hopes are now as low as they have ever been.

Unbelievable. At this rate, I am deeply considering turning my attention back to DriveSavers. Their inspection is FREE and they actually let you talk to an engineer straight from the get-go. There is no run-around.

That sounds like a plan...

Hey man, keep your spirits up... Don't worry, most of it will be recovered..

Give us another report when you get it...

And good luck, keep your fingers crossed.. All the best..

CR2 files will appear as TIF files when recovering.. as a data recovery company, they should surely know this?

if you don't have any joy - PM me

**Update**

Here's an email I got today from Kroll OnTrack:

"Shane,

Paul and the engineers have worked on putting together a thumbnail report to show you the files that are recoverable. However, the issue is that this would not be an accurate report as to whether or not those files would open. In order to determine this the engineers would have to go through and test every single file. They have spent the better part of a day doing just this, however, they are nowhere near done and unfortunately we will not be able to go through every single file. At this point, it looks like approximately 10% of the files will open. If you would like to proceed with the recovery, we will perform it for $695.

Please let me know if you have any questions as well as how you would like to proceed."

Thank you.

Wow. So they want me to throw down almost 700 dollars and I still have NO IDEA exactly WHAT they found? This company is an absolute disgrace.
R-Studio and GetDataBack are both FAR AND AWAY superior. It's true and this *is* the proof.

OnTrack's ONLY saving grace here is if they somehow recovered files that were not able to open previously. However, as the email implies, I have no way of knowing if this did or did not happen.

What a joke.
