canon t3i vs 7d video

Hey everyone, I am looking to buy a dslr camera and right now I am debating whether or not to spend extra money on the t3i over the t2i. I was told today that the video in the t3i is comparable to the 7d's, that it gets more vibrant colors and higher contrast, and overall a much better look than the t2i. I can't find any reviews that will actually support this. Can anyone confirm or deny this for me, and maybe give me some buying advice?

Crop camera for video?

Just get a Lumix GH2 and buy an adapter for whatever lenses you use. I'm about to sell my 7D for the GH2 (which is much cheaper and is generally better for video) to compliment my 5D II.

If you are really hung up on Canon though then I would go for the T2i, the video is pretty much exactly the same as the 7D's, and even if it wasn't, none of that stuff will matter after you do some color grading.

1080p is 1080p regardless of the source...

You may gain some bells and whistles with one body over another but the basic, un-treated video is the same.

What I am about to say is going to sound a little contradictory, but bear with me. If your primary usage is video, the t3i may be your best option among the 3. The 7d is a superior camera in terms of build quality and when it comes to still photography. The t3i is pretty much the t2i with an articulated screen and a couple of minor features. if the articulated screen is not that important to you and you can get a significant discount on t2i compared to t3i, that is not a bad choice since you can apply the savings to a better lense. In my personal experience, the articulated screen is worth about a $100 difference. There is NO difference in video quality between t3i and t2i. On the surface, there is no difference between the video quality of any of them since they use the same chip. In real word practice, the 7d might (and i really stress might) wield slightly better results due to features that are more geared towards helping the professional like being able to dial in color temperature. The 7d also yields slightly better results in high iso shots.

The t2i and t3i do have one advantage over the 7d and that is the ability to use the magic lantern hack. This 3rd party firmware provides extra functionality like focus assist and the ability to disable the AGC for sound.

I personally own a 60D and shoot with a t2i w/ magic lantern at work. I enjoy both although once i got the 60d, the t2i felt even more lightweight and fragile than I noticed previously. For me the 60d was a good compromise of the extra features of the 7d while being closer to price to the t2/3i range. I also figure canon will be replacing/upgrading both the 5d and 7d in the near future so rather than spend money on 7d now, i will get the most out of 60d and maybe upgrade when new versions of 7d or 5d are available.

T2i with Magic Lantern beats the 7d for video.

Leaves you with lots of money left over for more glass too.

Umm that isn't even close to correct.

Ummm, yeah it is...

All else being equal, NTSC or PAL 1080p is simply a common broadcast standard. Whatever you want to do to it beyond the basic standard is camera specific which is what I originally posted.

you said 1080p the basic untreated video is the same. There is a major difference between my GoPro, 7D and EX-3. Maybe you mean the dimensions are the same, yes, but the video produced by the codecs and bitrate are quite different even though they are technically shot at a 1920x1080 resolution with a progressive frame rate. I think I get what you are saying, it was just worded in a way that someone who doesn't understand this stuff could take it incorrectly.

There are some good points brought up in this thread. I agree with weareall, if you're going with a Canon DSLR for video, the T3i or T2i are better uses of money than a 7d (if you're sticking with crop sensors).
Kento makes a good point as well, if your interested in a DSLR for video, the GH2 gets really good reviews for video. I would even add that the Sony Alphas with their translucent mirrors also get high marks for video, particularly in their fast and accurate focusing.
If your set on the choices in your original post, IMHO the T3i is the better choice.

The digital zoom of the T3i and the swivel lcd is a really nice feature for shooting video. I realized how helpful shooting with the swivel for video is when I got the 60D. I heard the heck really adds abilities for the rebels.

They all have the same sensor so I would expect them to process the same, but there are more features on the rebels for video especially with the hack.
