Why can't I get my camera to shoot in manual mode with flashes in the dark. Even in manual the camera is metering and won't fire? Help

I agree with kjonnnn... or try to at least get a little ambient light on your subject/focal point. Then turn it off when focused. (A flashlight works wonders in the dark and focusing on your subject)

If you're completely in the dark, have you tried turning the AF off and focusing manually.
I'm thinking, that if you're completely in the dark with the AF ON, the camera isn't finding focus and doesn't fire until it does. I know mine won't fire until it finds a focus.

Might he have the AF assist lights turned off? Mine shoots great in the dark as long as they're on.

That's certainly possible.
