Hi George,

As I said to David, I think it's a great idea and appreciate the offer to help. Alien Bees are analog strobes and don't present any problems in terms of the power supply or compatibility. I would, however, like to do a pop test to demonstrate the difference in power consumption between analog and digital strobes and to show how much battery life you have if you're using an analog strobe such as an Alien Bees B800. A single B800 would certainly do for testing.

Okey, dokey.... let me know.

regards, george w

Rob,
If you want me to, I have an ABR800 that I could send along with the E640s.
Save George having to pack things up.
Or, you could send me the Mini and I could test is along side my VML. :-)

(OK, I tried) :)

HI David,

I've contacted George and actually asked if he could send a B1600 so we can see how a 640 Watt second analog strobe performs.

OK,
Let me know if you want the Es and where to send them.

can't wait to see the results of this. thanks for putting the effort in Rob.

on a side note, i'm thinking a nice way to hang this on a stand when on location would be a super clamp. I'm assuming you've got one of these laying around Rob.... is the strap too wide, or would it hang nicely off one of those?

Typically it's a 3 day trip. I've gotten many deliveries from Innovatronix and it's never taken longer than 3 days unless there is some sort of hold at customs, but since they started using DHL there haven't been any delays.

I'm just digging in to the testing and should have lots of results in this next week.

The shoulder bag (included) can certainly hang from a hook on a super clamp or any other doodad you like. The strap is soft and flexible so as long as you don't mind bunching it up instead of laying flat, you can hang it on just about anything.

Cool. I got my DHL tracking number last night so I guess I'll have mine on Tue or Wed.

I'd say Monday or Tuesday. ;)

EDIT: I don't like the DHL system because it would never show an estimated date of delivery. UPS does that very well but at least for these international orders I haven't seen an estimated delivery date with DHL.

Hi All,

Pop tests with the Explorer Mini have been going on for a few days now and by the end of next week I'll be able to provide numbers for a selection of strobes, including bi-voltage units.

Innovatronix is releasing some pop test numbers as well and the combined results cover most of the popular strobes of different power levels.

___

On a personal note, I just wanted to thank everyone once again for your support and for keeping my Inbox full with kind words and positive thoughts. My father was released from the hospital last night and is home resting and doing well. Thank you to my friends and to those that don't even know me.

Just giving an update here.

It should be no more than another 2 to 3 days before I have all the results of the pop tests for battery life using the Explorer Mini compiled.

Innovatronix has some numbers they'll be releasing for:

Profoto Compact 600R
Hensel Integra Pro 500 Plus
Elinchrom BX500Ri
Elinchrom D-Lite 4it

The strobes mentioned above are the bi-voltage strobes tested. They'll also have numbers for strobes that are not bi-voltage.

I tested:

PCB Einstein E640
Elinchrom 600RX
Elinchrom BX500Ri
Elinchrom D-Lite 4it
PCB B800
Elinchrom 300RX

Rob,
Good news about your dad.

I realize most people use a single manufacturer's lights but it would be interesting to see what the impact is combining bi-voltage and single voltage lights, as well as lights from different manufacturers.

My gut says that there will be no noticeable difference but as long as you're testing. :-)

Where can I see those BXRI test results? Heres a video of it being used with Hensels http://www.youtube.com …ature=channel_video_title (external link)

I don't own one but someone on here might find it useful. =)
