I found this link/site and I just dont know what to say about this.
I've never seen something vicious be pleasurable to people even if its for food supply purposes.

Photographer documented slaughter of whales something about part of tradition ??? (external link) His photo series is not for the faint-hearted DO NOT CLICK if you're like that.

Personally I found it to be wrong and cruel on a certain level. I'm not a Peta activist or any of those other groups, but from what I saw in the images it's not something I would personally want to ever partake in or let my kids be around this to see like some of those people have their toddlers around.Surely there is some kind of a decree on how this is handled in the world.

Your thoughts on this ?

Much of society has become disconnected with the struggle of life on this planet; we get our meat packaged and processed from multi-conglomerate stores, or clothing comes to us neatly pressed and packaged too. I spent some time traveling daily past a gigantic cattle processing plant, the smell was atrocious and sickening.

Every now and then we need to go out and forage/hunt for ourselves to understand how connected we are with nature. I gave up hunting with weapons many years ago; took up hunting with a camera.

Reminds me of the movie The Cove.

I've seen this before on the BBC's "Coast" tv series. Sadly it only served to to remind me that under a thin veneer of respectability, we are all actually blood thirsty savages. As for the photographer,it's happening, document away.

I simply do not see how anyone can be happy or even rejoicing (tradition or not) about something like this. I'm almost positive if it was wolves, dogs, monkeys, or koala bears it would cease and never happen again. The fact that this takes places on an annual basis, thats not cool at all.

Are you happy when you and your buddies crack open some brews and fire up the barbie?

How is a yearly tradition any more disturbing then what is happening 24/7 to feed the massess?
Not trying to be insensitive, I just find it interesting that we are offended when we see photographs of wild animals being killed and processed, but fail to consider where our chicken and beef come from.

Australia, for many years has been at logger heads with the Japanese government for their "culling" of Minke whales in the Southern Ocean. Japan says that the whales are slaughtered for scientific research but much of the meat ends up on the dinner plate.

Humpback whales are also taken. These huge and beautiful creatures make their way up and down the Australian coastline during migration.

There is a headland near my house where I can sit and watch these whales play in the ocean.

Wow, that is a lot of blood. I have no idea what they're doing that for but they're just animals. Ironic how irrationally sensitive people are about animals but won't even help dying people. Animals are to eat, big deal.

Animals share this planet just like humans do. I grew up near the ocean as a kid. On a couple of occasions a whale or two had beached themselves on my home beach. It's amazing to see how many (hundreds) people risked injury trying to get these whales back into the water.

I find your post incredibly insensitive. Many whales are just beginning to come back from the brink of extiction.

BTW,, have you ever seen a whale at close quarters?

Animals are no different than humans. Humans just 'think' they are better than all other animals. They are not just to eat, there needs to be a balance.

If they weren't being eaten, I would certainly look down upon this. Humans are animals and lots of animals eat other ones, so it really doesn't phase me provided everything gets put to good use.

I get what you're saying but I just don't agree with that mindset, regardless if it's insensitive or not. And yes, I've seen whales and all kinds animals and have wanted a ferret before but if I had to kill it for food then I'm sure it wouldn't be a problem. As far killing for fun is concerned, I'm not quite sure how I feel about that. That's more complicated.

They're entirely different from humans but I don't expect you to all of the sudden agree; I go by the Bible and it's clear that animals are lower than humans, to be commanded by us and so forth.

Ask the turkeys how they feel about Thanksgiving.

I most certainly am against senseless and purposeless killing of animals. Howvever I have nothing against killing animals for consumption.

It's called the food chain.

Excellent post. I spent some time in the Northwest Territories of Canada a couple of years ago and it happened to be at a time when their seal hunt was on. I took a number of shots but I was astounded at how nothing and I mean nothing is wasted. Had I been able to go back in a couple of months after that I could have gone to their annual whale hunt. If they don't do this hunting they don't eat. It is a tradition for them and one that I truly hope they get passed down for generations to come.

I grew up on a farm and if my father didn't go out and hunt there would have been times there would have been no meat on the table. Sometimes you just have to do it. I also hunted for many years but gave it up for a camera.

I know there will be many that are horrified at this kind of stuff but it is necessary for some peoples to simply eat. While I could never kill something again I don't begrudge those that do it for sustenance. The thought of killing for fun doesn't interest me anymore and I doubt that this is what this picture is about in any event.

My life is like one big RAW file....way too much post processing needed.
