I'm teaching myself how to use Photoshop CS5, coming from The GIMP.

Obviously CS5 is much more powerful, but there are a couple little things I actually miss about The GIMP, believe it or not.

The one I'm currently fighting with is the command "Open As Layer," which was available in GIMP. As it implies, it would allow you to have an image open for editing, then in the FILE menu, you could select "Open As Layer" to open a separate image as a new layer in the current file.

Very handy, for a variety of reasons. And I can't for the life of me figure out how to do it in CS5. I just can't believe this option isn't included somewhere, so it must be under a different name, or buried in a menu somewhere.

Can anyone provide some insight?

Thanks much.

"open a separate image" would be a completely different image? I don't have CS5 & just use the Move Tool to drag the background layer of new image into the old one. If they're the same size, holding down Shift before you let go will let PS register them.

@ TheLostVertex: You, sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

All responses are much appreciated - the File > Place command is exactly what I was after.

There's also this option from Bridge:

I found a similar command within PS as well, but you have to select all the images at the front end. Takes more planning :P

You can simply drag it from Bridge or any file management utility into Photoshop. If you drop it onto the image it will open in the current image as a smart object. If you drop it onto an area in the toolbar areas at the top of the screen or in the area where the tab titles go it will open in its own file.

You can use the Mini Bridge to Drag and drop an image which will place it as another layer on top an already open Document(Image file)

You can also just open an image as a separate document, and then with the Move tool to drag and drop one onto the other. For that there are a couple different ways of doing that. With the Move Tool Selected. Just left click on one image, and while holding the mouse button slide over the tab of the image you want to drag the image onto. That will activate that tab and then slide down onto the image and release the mouse button. That will place the image onto a layer. Hold down the shift key and it will align the layer automatically, otherwise you will have to manually move it around to line it up.
The other way is to use to click the Arrange Documents Icon on the top tool bar and drag and drop between the windows to arrange them into layers however you like..

If you know ahead of time which images you want in layers of the same document you can use the Load Files Into Stack Script.

You can also Drag and drop directly from the Windows Folder(using windows explorer) into an open document in CS5. Just make sure you drag it over and drop it on top the image that is already open, then it will place it as an additional layer.

Adobe TV has all kinds of video tutorials you might find useful for learning your way around CS5.
