Heres my first attempt a some proper portraits, it was very hard, alot more difficult than I thought. It was also really difficult to keep her still please C&C. I just wish i had got closer! All done with the 1000d & Kit lens

first picture seems back focused and the last picture seems focused on the pram. i think its most important to go for the eyes when focusing. dont use auto modes on your camera. use one autofocus point, aim it at the eyes.
also the cars parked in the background ruin the shots. look at different ways of composing to as to hide distractions. dont be afraid to get her into the sun either. think of the sun as a giant studio light. i would use it as a rim light and then the onboard flash can do some fill to balance things out, unless you have a speed light, then you can get creative with off camera flash.

The most important piece of gear you own, resides in your head and its called your brain.

I agree with the previous poster. Greater DOF might have made the cars "disappear" and watch AF points. He gives you some good pointers. You might also try a reflector.

Nice start.

Comments and way to improve things:

1. Throw that kit lens and get 50mm f1.8 and use that instead. Sorry if I am being rude.
2. Watch the back grounds. Like in #2, if you took the shot by lying on the grass one won't see those ugly cars.
3. No on camera flash. Get a cheapy eTTL cord and move it to the side atleast even if bare.
