G12 question...

I have sold all my DSLR gear, now I'm going to buy a digital point and shoot. I have read alot about the G12...is it really as good as all the reviews say. Please help convince me to go today and get it. I want to hear from actual users.

Of course it is a really good camera. However coming from an slr you are either going to have to learn what it does well and what it doesn't or you will be very frustrated. I can guarantee though that there is far more than enough things it does well to keep you entertained and producing good photography for years to come.

The main obstacles will be getting a shallow depth of field (not easy with a point and shoot) and shooting in extremely low-light conditions (particularly if shooting moving objects).

For landscapes, in which you want everything in focus, a point and shoot can actually be an advantage.

But if, for example, you're shooting a person who is ten or fifteen feet away, it will be very difficult to isolate him from the background.

But go through the samples and see what you like.

Don't forget shutter lag!! You will have to get used to this.

hey quick question is the g12 one of the best point and shoots out today .. if not, which is the best overall point and shoot that is out as of now.. ( not just referring to canon, refrring to all brands)

I'm new to the g12,but it is a great camera,and its easy to fit an adapter on to use tele or close up kit on,one of the best for sure.

That is a question that could be answered a million ways.

Keep in mind that it's 7 grand (and that doesn't include the price of the lens).


Every single camera out there, regardless of size or price, is a collection of compromises. The perfect camera still has not been invented.

In other words, technology has not yet matched the combination of the human brain and eyes.

I imagine the ultimate goal would be to digitally capture what your brain has processed, but first they have to make a Tom Cruise film about it.

Often "portrait" includes the wish for a blurred background. Is this part of your requirements?
