I have noticed some shots appear that my 60D may be back focusing. Here are a few examples. Not sure If auto focus may have missed, whether I moved after focusing or it is actually back focusing. It seems to be consistant with all my lenses as far as I can determine. Any input that would help determine would be helpful.

both shot at 1/800 sec., f8(wood):f6.3(fly), ISO 160(wood):200(fly)

The 60D unfortunately does not have micro adjustments like the 50D. Sorry to hear OP when did you get it?

The 60D can not be MA, so your only course of action is to send it to Canon and have it calibrated. Unless you recently purchased it, it might be able to return it for another. I got slammed when I stated in another thread that this was one of the reasons I would not own a 60D. :(

LOL...let's not go there. There is another thread comparing the two. Each has it's advantages. Just depends what you are looking for and how you are going to use it.

Read here for your answer.

No need to beat on the 60D... The one feature that would have been nice with the 60D was MA, but the other features over my T1i made it a good choice for me. I have only had it for about 3 weeks. Picked it up when Best Buy ran their deal. Maybe a trip to Canon is in store for it....

No reason to beat it up. It's a great camera. :D You could bring it back to Best Buy and see if they will exchange it...but chances are the replacement would need adjustment as well. But it might be worth a try. But best bet is send it along with your lens and have it calibrated.

Any camera can have problems; making the assumption that since yours may not be working correctly automatically makes another camera better is unwise.
Send it back for Canon to recalibrate and then you can make judgments and/or comparisons.

Makes me wonder if a simple firmware change can add the MA onto the 60d?

Any camera or lens can have problems, and most modern semi-pro & pro cameras take this into account and offer MA. It saves a lot of hassle.

If a firmware upgrade could add MA to the 60D it would be great. One reason I decided to upgrade from my T1i was that there were never any firmware updates to improve it's video features. I hope that Canon will continue to provide updates to improve the 60D, but who knows. None the less, I really like my 60D and if it has to make a trip to Canon I guess it will have to go. Checked Best Buy's policy and returns are only permitted for 14 days for cameras.

Not sure If auto focus may have missed, whether I moved after focusing

Before you can blame the camera and weep and wail over the lack of MFA (which nobody cared about until 2008 and now has been deemed essential) you really need to do a couple of proper tests.

1. Use a tripod. You'd be amazed how many people move slightly after focussing.

2. Use a proper test shot. The picture of the leaves is too busy - there are far too many things for the AF system to select as a possible target.

3. Use different lenses. The AF system is a combination of camera and lens functions. The camera figures out how the lens needs to move. The camera can slightly miscalculate how far the lens needs to move, or the lens can make an error in the amount it does move. In the real world both will happen (because absolutley, perfectly, accurate enginerring is impossible).

If all your lenses backfocus when used on a tripod with a remote release then your camera will have to be returned for recalibration.

It stands for Micro Adjustment and it allows you to manually adjust the auto focus of bodies. In the case of the OP, had the 60D had this capability he would be able to adjust the AF to fix his issue. I guess Frank and I will have to disagree. I think it is essential now a days. Sort of like electricity. Today we find having electricity is essential where as before it was 'invented' it was not essential. LOL Not trying to beat Frank up...just my point of view. But for him it is not essential as I think he shoots mostly landscape photography...which in that case you will not be able to tell if a body is front or back focusing. But if I submit an image to MaxPreps and the face of a player is not tack sharp the image will be rejected. So for me it is essential.

Hope that helps.
