I've been pondering getting one of these for a couple of years for photo retouching, especially portraits. I picked up one on Sunday but didn't install it until today after I finished a shoot. I'd heard they can take a couple of weeks to get used to, I'd seen a demonstration and got to play with one for a few minutes this weekend before deciding to buy.

It took me about 7 images, going through my workflow using it instead of a mouse, the only button I was using with the scroll ring was brush size and that alone really was noticably faster. I might have been well off with the small tablet but I have this and already like it a lot. Editing down a couple hundred shots to ten and then processing them in LR3>CS5>Portrait Pro Studio 10>LR3 and I'd guess already it saved me about a half hour and I found it more enjoyable and precise. The biggest thing to get used to is that you don't scoot images or your mouse across the screen to get where you want to go, your entire screen is represented on the tablet so you just point on the part of the tablet as if you were tapping on the screen in the place you wanted to be. That took me about a half hour so slow down the do, I'm sure old habits will return but I'm liking this a lot. Also I really like the mouse that comes with it. To use it, you simply set the pen aside in it's little stand and put the mouse on the tablet, the rest is as you already know it.

Brush size in PSCS5: Alt+right click and drag left or right to change size, up or down to change hardness. (Ctrl+Alt+click on Mac) ;)

Yep, a tablet is very nice. As is the ability to brush pressure sensitive :)

Having a tablet and making myself dig deeper into Adjustment Layers is having a game-changing effect on my imagery right now.

Cloning, blending, outlining objects and 1001 other tasks are (IMO) infinitely easier with a pen and tablet.

Anybody use a tablet much with Lightroom? Mine has been collecting dust for a long time -- LR1.x didn't play well with one, at least on my system, and I haven't delved into it since my upgrade to LR3 -- I'm not even sure where all the pieces are:)!

I love my Intuos4 medium too. The pressure sensitive pen is a great asset with editing.

Well I'm using the tablet a lot with Lightroom3, some with PSCS5 and a lot with Portrait Professional Studio 10. I'm getting more precise with the pen, cutting out stray hairs in portraits, shading in while getting used to the variable pressure but at first I didn't even notice it. I've already gone back and re-retouched a number of photos simply because I think this system is encouraging me to do more because it's more precise and faster.

My wife has a small Wacom Bamboo that she's not using much. I haven't touched it, frankly it's a little intimidating to me; I'm not as enthusiastic about new-to-me tech as what I used to me.

Can anyone point me to a good tutorial on getting started with a tablet, especially in LR3?

Use the bamboo pen on the tablet much like you would a mouse, it's just more accurate.

I used to own the Intuos medium and upgraded to the large. It's nice to have a lot of surface area to work with.

This is a fact when working with layers. I couldn't do half the stuff without it. :)

Any advice on a trustworthy, good priced dealer for Waucom medium tablet?
I've heard, read too much about them to hold off at least trying one.

Thanks

A quick Google search for "amazon wacom" gave the following results:

http://www.google.com …urceid=ie7&rlz=1I7ADRA_en (external link)

Since the list includes both Amazon, a highly dependable retailer, and Wacom.com, I'd say you can't go wrong following either of those paths to get a good source.
