I'm sure this topic has been asked before but can anyone suggest a good tripod for a beginner?

One of the Manfrotto 190 or 055s maybe.
Get a ball head and some plates too.

Cheap tripods are usually more trouble than they are worth.

I really like the RC2 plate system.

Those Bestbuy / Wally-World Tripods make good flash stands though.

....the best camera is the one you have on you at the time.

Manfrotto 055xprob and 488RC2
Look at a good review at the Accessories and Storage forum

I can also recommend Feisol tripod and Photoclam ball head. They are a bit pricy but it'll be the last tripod you'll ever need to buy.

Personally, I am not a fan of the Manfrotto ballhead quick release system. I would suggest looking for a head that is compatible with the Arca-Swiss QR plate system. I have a Giottos ballhead that is Arca-Swiss compatible, and coupled that with a Flashpoint carbon fiber tripod from Adorama.

If you have more money to spend, Really Right Stuff makes excellent ballheads.

+1 for Arca-Swiss. If a RRS is out of the budget, try a flashpoint from adorama. I actually like mine, although I can't speak to it's longevity yet...

I bought one of the store brands from best buy. Its carbon fiber and sturdy. I think it was on sale for $150 or something. Does the job but if you lose the plate you are screwed! they don't have any spare parts what so ever.

Another for the Manfrotto O55XPROB I love it. If it fits your budget....even if not. Spend the extra money for years of service.

Find some models you like and check ebay. I originally bought a $50 tripod from Best Buy. Shortly thereafter I was looking for a good tripod. I went on ebay and got a Bogen 3011 (pretty simple set of legs) for $50 and then scored a Manfrotto 460MG head for about $40. The Best Buy tripod (as others have stated) is now used only for off camera flash. If I had just a little extra money I would have gone for the 190xprob or the 055xprob legs.

Thanks. So, I should get two separate things aside from a tripod? What does a ball head and plate do?

You got too complicated on me! Haha :) I didn't intend on spending over $100 on a tripod!

Seems like you're the second Arca-Swiss fan.
