I bought one of the store brands from best buy. Its carbon fiber and sturdy. I think it was on sale for $150 or something. Does the job but if you lose the plate you are screwed! they don't have any spare parts what so ever.

What is this "plate" talk?

Another for the Manfrotto O55XPROB I love it. If it fits your budget....even if not. Spend the extra money for years of service.

Manfrotto O55XPROB won't come up on Google.

You got too complicated on me! Haha :) I didn't intend on spending over $100 on a tripod!

In that case, buy either anything or nothing; the results will be much the same.

I just ordered the Manfrotto 055XPROB Pro Tripod Legs & Manfrotto 498RC2 Ball Head with Quick Release. Is there anything else I need? What are plates?

If you have more than one camera or maybe a lens that you will want to mount to the ball head, you will want extra quick-release (QR) plates so that you don't have to move the one QR plate from camera (or lens) to camera.

Click this link to see the Manfrotto 200PL14 QR plate (external link).

I'm a newbie as well and have just recently learnt all about plates! :-) They are the part that gets screwed into the bottom of the camera. Essentially, it allows you to attach the camera quickly via a release to the tripod head. That youtube vid from Nate is really good at showing you how it's done.

Here (external link)is it again.

Hope you enjoy the Manfrotto you just ordered! I'm planning to as well!

Hi! I'm a newbie! But I doubt it's a secret...

Watch Craigs list and Kijiji for a used ones, and you can save some money.

There is only one quick release plate that you can use. Go back up to post #22 and click on the link that I provided for you there. Of course, there are many vendors that sell that part, but you can see what you need there.

fvsurfer, may I ask how much you paid for the combo? I'm Canada so the deal and rebates in the US don't apply, but there are plenty of shops here; just want to get an idea how much it can cost.
