Have both Vanguard SBH-300 ballheads permanently attached to the tri-and monopod, respectively.I really find this more practical than,say,mounting/unmounting them in situations when seconds counts.
However...I'm a little reluctant about carying around the tri and mono with the ballheads exposed (I'm less worried about the legs' themselves).
What do you suggest for protection?
Some neoprene lens pouch,maybe?...or something specifically made for that purpose?
TIA!

RRS used to sell its ballheads with a Snoot Boot, which is a neoprene pouch with draw string. Just the right dimensions too. The Snoot Boot is made by OpTech and is available on the POTN Support Shop, at the top of every forum page, under soft lens covers:

measure your head to get the right diameter and length.
I like the cover, not so much to protect the metal head/clamp, but to protect the car interior/windows from the tripod attached to the backpack.

Mechanical shocks (the ones leaving some annoying dings, not to mention some tougher ones) as well as dust.

Neoprene like the "snoot boot" will keep the dust off while preventing scratches and cosmetic dings. Any mechanical shock that could do real damage to the ball head is not going to be stopped by such a thin and flexible material.

I'm aware on that.
Actually, how thick is the SnootBoot neoprene?

My tripods have been "unprotected" since they were new some seven or eight years ago and they have not had any damage at all worth worrying about. Minor dings to the finish are silly to worry about in my opinion.

Packed in a check-in bag, I'll just wrap it in a shirt or something. It's an odd shape and may scratch or damage something in the baggage or the baggage itself.

Just carrying out in the open, maybe an old thick cotton sock (or double it up with the second sock)... a black one if you don't want it to be noticeable, perhaps? ;)

I never thought of protection for either my ball head (I do protect my "bald" head from the sun though) or my monopod swivel head when carrying them around.

I do however, disconnect my ball head/swivel heads from the pods when I pack them in my suitcase to send as checked on airline baggage. Then I usually put them in old heavy weight hiking socks.
