Why do people do this?

Cause they're scamers or haven't the slightest clue what they're talking about. Almost every time I post something on C L I deal with a scamer..like.. My son is enrolled in a photoghaphy class in Nigeria and I will pay double your asking price..just give me your paypal account information so he can receive his much needed equipment ASAP...I guess people acutally fall for this.

It's a bit of supply and demand, except the Amazon computers only got half of it right.

The supply is low (of G9s), so the computer thinks the demand must be high.

About 8 years ago I was trying to sell a Titanium Powerbook and G4 tower on ebay. I marketed it as a "designers dream package". I was hoping to get $2200 for both. Some guy in Hawaii got so excited saying it was exactly the combo he was looking for. He asked me what I would do to end the auction early. Half humoring the guy I said $2600 and 10 minutes later he paypaled me the money. It was shocking that I ended my auction early for almost 20% more than what the machines were worth.

Gee, maybe I can sell my three year old G9 for "only" $800, since they are worth $1K now? Nobody studies Latin anymore, so they won't know about Caveat Emptor...

As Mike FairBanks suggested, those prices aren't real. Many (perhaps most) third party sellers on Amazon set their prices using computer algorithims. Sometimes they get fooled.

So when you're ready to purchase the price would become more realistic? Or if you overpaid you'd be refunded the difference
