For those of you who might have seen something like this before, October 29/30 (depending on your time zone) 2005 is Mars' closest approach this orbit. Last close approach, in Aug. 2003, was the closest in some long number of years and some calendar-impaired web surfers picked up notices of that from Google without noticing the year and reported that it was going to happen August 2005. But this one is legit.

What kind of zoom would you need to even get a half decent shot of it ?

... or are we talking about telescope minimum here ?

Thanks !

You'd want at least a 6" scope =)

Too much gear...

I'm looking through a 6" but the optics are so old that I can barely make out the big dark area of mars, can't see the caps. The good details are obscured by an equally old eyepeice, it was a gift, so I'm enjoying it for what it is. I recommend at least a 12mm eyepeice on anything under 100" FL with eye peice projection adapter at that magnification you loose too much light for a quick exposure. You will need a good tracking setup, if you are tracking might as well add a good filter to cut the atmospheric haze.

It's big this time around and it looks great but you really need fresh equipment or untouched optics so you can get as much details. BTW this will be the Best year for a long long long time. While I was aiming the scope I got to see a great big fireball meteor streak, awesome stuff..

The brightest polar cap is pointing away from us (if I remember correctly), so it won't be very visible anyway. Still, there should be some detail in the planet with a 6" scope.

Mars is the brightest object in the eastern sky and looks reddish. Venus is the brightest in the western sky. To get an image you would need a T-Adapter for your camera and a telescope with a clock drive or you could use a zoom lens with your camera piggybacked. I have a Meade 8" scope but the secondary mirror has over 70% of the mirror corroded. :( Even with that I could make out the dark area. Venus only had it's disk halfway lit. Anyway as fate would have I don't have a zoom lens yet for my digital nor does the t-adapter work on the digital. Its for the Canon bayonet style. Next year Mars will be as close is 2018.

I had no luck photographing the Mars.. Due to the fact that, it was cloudy, with overcast, and the visibility was not that good due to high humidity.
Anyway maybe with in next few years….

The equipment used were:
6” reflector German equatorial mount. Eyepiece 1.25”
Canon EOS 300D connected to eyepiece using adaptors.
Ferrari 3400 Acer connected to camera and used to take photos….to minimize moment and camera shake.

And lots of beer….

I think I saw mars, but I don't have anything like the equipment needed to photograph it.

I know what you mean since I was in Hong Kong/China last year and never once saw blue sky. Too many coal-fired power plants with not enough scrubbers in China, apparently....
