Need help on T3i Wireless Flash

How do I turn off build in flash and use only wireless flash?
I got my t3i I set it for use wireless flash with 430EX with beauty dish, but I have to turn on build flash on the camera to get 430 Wireless fire, if I tun off build flash also can not get 430EX ireless fire.

Can I use only 430EX wireless flash?
or I have to use build in flash and 430EX fire at the same time.

Please help

The camera actually uses the built-in flash to communicate with the slaves (430ex).

You should be able to set the popup flash to only fire for control and not help with the exposure. You can do this with the 7d and the 60d, so I would think the new Rebel would do this also. Your owner's manual should tell you how!

Under the flash menu you tell it to use the off camera flash only. You must have the built in flash up and it will fire a small burst of light to communicate with your 430 but, it is so little light it should not affect exposure unless you are reaaaaalllly close. Also, the preflash it emits helps focus in dark situations.

Technically it's on, but not contributing.

I think you can set the flash not to contribute to the exposure.

Just because it is flashing to control the remote flash units does not mean that it is flashing when the shutter is open.

I just looked at the online version of the manual and in section 8 it tells you how to just have the remote flashes light up the scene.
It is under "Built in Flash func. Setting" in the camera menu and then "Wireless Function" You only want the icon for the Speedlite showing.
