I just got Photomatix though I began bracketing some shots quite some time ago hoping to eventually try HDR. Here are two of my first attempts. C&C welcome.

This shot was done in Photomatix then processed further to add an aged look. I had taken pictures of black steam engines before, and never liked the way they turned out because they tend to be so march darker than everything else around.

Here is the original (middle of 3) exposures for this shot.

This shot was taken at the Paterson Museum (the building in the background) in Paterson NJ. The factory where the engine was built is in the same historic neighborhood -- famous as an early US industrial center.

I like the aged look of the train but I also like the original as well.

Thanks. I thought the black in the original was a little too dark to see much detail. My initial HDR attempts, in color were an improvement (I don't recall if I saved that or not before going with sepia).

When I shot a lot of black and white for my college newspaper and yearbook, contrast was the quality that we sought. What I don't like about this HDR/Sepia is that, considering that I chose to go with black and white, is that I may have taken the HDR too far since it lacks contrast.

Nice job on both of these, the train does look an old photo. Nice...

The aged one sort of loses the HDR look which is fine because I'm not to into HDR. I've tried it but never got the results I was looking for.

I agree.. So far what I have done in HDR has been fairly low key (the sunrise is about as HDRish as I can tolerate).

Someone on the board coined the term 'clown puke'.. which I think is appropriately describes a lot of HDR that I have seen.

I really like the first one. I like what you did with the halo and made it look like the sunset. Keep up the good work!

I like the first one, but I'd lose some of the water at the bottom. There appears to be spots of black clipping in it.
