I followed all the good advice I was given here. Shot everything 1/320th, f3.2, ISO1600, 70-200mm f2.8, 580EX on HSS. The images I did get were better than my last attempt. However my timing isn't yet good on passes ... anybody have any advice on capturing a reception. These two images are pretty blotchy after compressing for upload here but the originals are clean. Since I have no official affiliation with the team and no permission from parents I won't put them on my website and link to them, sigh.

The piece of advice I would pass on is that HSS uses a lot of power so put a set or two of extra batteries in your pocket ... mine ran out while my team was a couple of yards off the goal and the image I got was way, way dark since the end zones aren't lighted much. By the time I walked back to my pack and reloaded freshly charged batteries there was action on the field.

When a player is catching a catch, take picturs randonly until the player receives the ball, even if it's a 20d, it should work. Good pics by the way.

What body did you use?

ACDC ... the problem is that you can only get ONE off per catch with the flash ... without the flash you can't even see the ball and the closer to the goals the worse the light is. Guess I'll try shooting what feels like a little earlier and see what happens.

i don't know how you guys do it. when the lights come on i go home, end of story. i think you have done well here and you have a reception there dwight, your just on the wrong side of the field ;) a little more practice and you will be getting much better action in your shots.

i really wish there was a trick to getting receptions but sadly there isn't. i have noticed at the university level you can tell right off the line most of the time if the receiver is the #1 or #2 read because he is actually into his route. if not they tend to lolly gag, when this happens quickly try to pick up another receiver.

I'm curious ... does anyone ever complain about shooting flash?

I mean... that 580 is a *powerful* little unit. What if using it caused someone to fumble the ball? Has anything like that every happened? Has anyone ever complained that it *might* happen?

Usually Quarter back or football player isn't looking toward the flash, usually there looking in the sky for a catch, or for a TD.... In volley ball, thats a different story, I don't know why, they allow it in basket ball

cheers,

Ho Dwight! I really enjoy high school football. #1 is great and #4 is awesome. Pack those batteries and keep shooting. :-)

Bless the recently fallen and their family and friends.
I have a Cannon with me at all times. You can't take the shot if you don't have something with which to shoot.

Curtis, thank you.

3oh6, we do what it takes!

dwterry, no complaints ... I think outdoor sports generally don't complain and basketball is so used to it.

PhotosGuy
, thank you.

Maureen, I had to take the 'red eye' out of many but once that's done the eyes really come through and you can see the intensity of the players.

Skip, thank you ... I'll probably do one more this year.

If it means anything, they announced the SY/Lompoc halftime score at the Cabrillo game and everyone boo'd. They hate Lompoc.

I have to say I am impressed with these images - at night...the one thing I might say is have you put these images through a program like Neatimage? that might help take away some of the unvoidable grain that comes with ISO 1600...

Cheers,
