dw ... it is now on my wishlist ... thanks for thinking of it! I had a Quantum 1B+ for my previous digital body and it did both body and flash. Think I'll get a 2+2.

Dwight,

I have the 2x2 with my 580EX and shoot 2-3 HS games each weekend. We're into the playoffs now, and I shot one game last night, just finished one this afternoon, and I'm at a Panera Bread restaurant right now ingesting the images and charging my 2x2 before going back out into the rain to shoot my third game in the past 24 hours.

The 2x2 keeps up with my 20D pretty well, especially if you only use the 580 for fill, like I just did in the rain during today's afternoon game. At night, I either leave the 580 on ETTL-II or manual 1/4 power. Anything more and it's only good for maybe 2 frames per second. Still better than the 580 without the flash, but not up to the 5 fps of the 20D.

One way to minimize red-eye is to use a flash bracket like the StroboFrame Press-T that I have. Can't use it in the rain, since there is no way to wrap an Aquatech around it, but if it's not raining, it does a pretty good job. Doesn't totally eliminate it, but does minimize red-eye.

Nice shots, by the way. Well, it's back out into the rain for me, then a day's worth of editing 1,500 shots. Yikes!

Dennis, I decided that I didn't need external battery power for my 1D Mark II so I just got (literally unpacked it after reading your reply) the CP-E3 which hold eight additional AAs and is probably quite a bit lighter than the 2x2. I do almost no flash but when I do I usually want somewhat improved recycle times and the battery pack claims to cut cycle time to a third. And since HS football "requires" HS Sync the additional batteries also double or more the number of cycles. Since football is over for me I don't know when I will get a chance to try this thing out.

You guys have RAIN!? :-)

Me, still at Panera trying to rush the 2x2 into at least the 75% range. Might need the extra charger which claims to recharge the 2x2 from drained to 100% in 1.5 hours.

The big benefit, as I understand it, of the 2x2 is its faster recycle time over pretty much anything out there. Plus, I use it to power my 20D AND my 580, which theoretically should let me shoot two full games at night with the flash. We''ll see when the State finals come up in a few weeks and I have to shoot 8 games in two days.

I have exeprimented with flash all season, since I started the year with just a Rebel XT (1600 highest ISO) and a f 2.8 120-300 Sigma lens. Picked up the 20D a few weeks ago with my earnings from shooting, and a 70-200L f 2.8 and a 85 f 1.8. Tempted to try the 20D and the 85 f 1.8 just to see how it might work in ambient light for night football.

Started the season using FEC at +1/3 - +1, ,and eventually settled with straight ETTL-II, mostly for fill.

Oh well, looks like the 2x2 is showing 3 steady and one blinking light, which means I'm over 75%. Time to go get wet.

Yep, even the midwest occsionally has rain.

Dwight, great job with the flash. Night hs games are a pita. I just shot a game Friday at 3200 iso, I hope to get a few decent pics. I need to try using a flash the next time out at night.

In regards to your question about capturing receptions. typically we're shooting slightly behind or past the line of scrimmage. If you think you have a passing situation I would move downfield about 5 yards beyond the first down marker. From here you're in a much better position to get the receiver on a pass play.

Dennis, we don't get rain but for a smattering a couple of months ... I was teasing!

Seaum, thanks! I usually stand five yards the other side so I can pick up the backfield play ... D'uh ... explains why passes are so tough!
