I am looking for some guidance.

A few years ago I built a core I7 920 system. It is housed in this case:
Cooler MAster HAF 932

Anyways, being poor and in college still I skimped on the OS hard drive and reused an old WD rapter 37gig drive (34gig of usable space). Well, I managed to cram vista 64 on it at the time with like 3 gigs to spare (wasn't aware windows bloated out to almost a 30gig install vs my linux installs of 2gigs or so).

In addition I have been using a pair of WD 250gig drives in a RAID1 format using the onboard RAID controller of my mobo.

I am reaching critical mass here in terms of storage. With all the safety updates and such from vista I am now at 1 gig or less in free space on the OS harddrive. My RAID array has 60gigs free.

I haven;t been up on all the new hardware and software that has been out in the last 2 years.

I am looking for a RAID1 solution that is independent of my workstation's operating system. So I have seen some internal options and the more common external options.

Now, i also have an older dual core opti 170 build from 2004. It's mobo has the nvidia RAID controller on it and minus harddrives is in perfect shape.
I'm looking to add 1 to 2 terabytes of RAID1 storage and the RAID must be able to be setup and accessed from my current system so i can transfer my data over as I plan to use one of the current 250gig drives as my new OS drive.

Suggestions? Sorry for any confusion.

Basically can someone recommend an internal or external RAID product or should I just setup the extra pc system with linux+on board raid and turn it on whenever I want to store digital negatives and other info? The second PC idea seems like the most PITA in terms of usability and use of SPACE,

Thought:

I suppose I could setup a second RAID1 array on SATA slots 5 and 6, correct? I have a 4 drive mobo controller and a 2 drive controller?

Never done that. Additionally, how hard is it to get windows to recognize and "old" array if you format and reinstall?
