Maybe this is kind of off topic, but I'm planning to assemble a new system was just wondering if anyone knows if this product exists in one product:

- Preferably in a 5.25" bay
- 3.5" sata dock (possibly with 2.5" insert also possible)
- CF card reader
- SD card reader (don't need, but can't imagine one without it).

In a perfect world it'd be connected internally by both a SATA port and/or a USB 2/3 interface. I know I can easily connect both very very little money, but I'd really love to reduce cable clutter and keep a clean desk...
I've seen both of these products separate, but never in one case, let alone a 5.25" bay...

Please point me to this or manufacture it for me

I believe you can find them if you look at the computer parts on NewEgg or similar. For my new SandyBridge I started looking for something similar. Then I decided I only wanted USB 3 ports on the desktop. I plug in my Delkin USB 3 multicard reader as needed. And since it is USB 3, it is also backwards compatible to USB 2. With USB 3 ports on the front of the desktop, no reason to use SATA/eSATA. Even LaCie is dropping portable SATA drives. I don't think external SATA, just like FW and USB 2, has much of a future.

Yes! Thanks, I'm gonna find one of those ^^ I found another but the HDD connection was USB2. Not a major problem, but I'd prefer USB + eSATA so it won't need an additional power supply.

In my quest for handy 5.25" devices, another one I found was a fan controller bay that took a slimline DVD player and had a cardreader (Scythe Kama Panel 4) and one that takes a 2.5" disk instead of the dvd drive.

I'm starting to think the 5.25" bay won't have enough space around a 3.5" slot...

There's also this one, but it's NOT a dock..

That was a review few years old, maybe you should check that company, they could be producing dock versions..

I just stumbled across this today and thought of this thread.

http://techiser.com …function-dock-126160.html (external link)

It is only USB 2 and is a dock rather than bay.

Just thought I'd toss it out there.

Thanks for the tip, Tom
I've found this one in a local store; http://www.sabrent.com …rive-enclosures/DSH-CRHU/ (external link)

Pretty much all I need, apart from being a 5 1/4" bay. I figured there's simply not enough space around a 3.5" dock in a 5 1/4" bay for a full card reader. With some smart layouting you can probably get an SD and CF reader but no manufacturer seems to wanna do that ;)

There seems to be a lot of these being made recently by Chinese, Hong Kong and Taiwan-based manufacturers... There is almost a new one coming out every other week..

If you can afford to wait a little bit, you can buy a much much faster Firewire 800 version rather than USB. They do actually exist presently, but without the card slots..

I have no use for FW 800 (only FW400 on my PC), but I saw there's a few eSATA models that would have an improvement. Unfortunately, it usually takes a while for them to be for sale here or even ship to the netherlands.

At a mere 27 euros, I decided to just go for this one and see how it works out for me. At the very least it'll make backing up my entire system a lot more pain-free since a 2TB drive is under 60 euros now...
What is kind of weird is that the Store's description calls it "eSATA/USB2 dock", but without a picture, so I'll just let myself be surprised.

Edit: looks like this version actually does have eSATA: http://sabrent.nl …rd-reader-usb-20-hub.html (external link)
I'll report back how it works here ;)
The store has my order complete except the motherboard, so I hope I can start building tomorrow night.

Small update, the image I linked was actually not of the device I own, but seems the same in a different package. It works quite well. The HDD is sped by an eSATA interface, and the cardreader is USB2 (I don't think I have any problem with USB2 for cardreaders, since it's still over the limit of the fastest CF cards I own).

This is my new favorite way to make full system backups though. My internal HDD is a 1 TB Samsung F3 + SSD, so if I pop a 2TB disk in there, I can easily draw an image and still have plenty of space to backup abour 4 inctances of my images and LR catalog separately.
Just have to get some sort of way to make images easier, because I have to do it with a bootdisk now. Ideally I'd schedule this...

Back on topic: this device is great, and I can recommend it. I would have loved it in a 5.25" bay, but I reckon there's simply not enough space for a full cardreader + 3.5" slot. This is the next best thing, and it's pretty good for backing up on separate HDD's. With current HDD prices, you can easily have a 2TB drive at various places, which serve as a third or 4th backup. I'm thinking of ordering some HDD sleeves and adding another of these machines at work.
