Since getting my 400/5.6 last week, I've decided it's time to retire my loyal, but aged Leitz Tiltall. I am planning on getting a Kirk BH-3 and a Gitzo tripod, but can't decide which one. I know that most will recommend carbon fiber, but I really don't want/need to spend that much, nor is weight my biggest concern. Whatever I get will be lighter than the Tiltall. I don't do a lot of serious backwoods hiking. At worst, I might put the tripod on my shoulder while walking around the zoo for a few hours. It will need to support a 20D with grip. The two biggest lenses I have (for now and a while) are the 70-200/2.8 and the 400/5.6, which are used at times with the TC1.4. I am trying to decide between the following two Gitzos:

G1120 $180 weight 3.5lbs / capacity 10lbs

G1220 $265 weight 4.9lbs / capacity 13lbs

Will the G1120 be sufficiently stable for my use, or does the G1220 offer enought additional benefit to be worth the extra $85 and 1.4lbs?

Thanks for your help.

The weight of the combo with the Kirk head starts to get a little close to the limits of the 1120. Having that extra stability is always good. The weight difference of the two tripods isn't a big deal. I would go with the 1220. Sum up the 1320 also. It might be overkill right now, but if you want to upgrade later on.....300mm, 400, 500....

Thanks, Radar-Eclipse. I appreciate your opinion, especially since I placed an order last night for the 1220! I figured, as with most things, the extra $85.00 will be soon forgotten, and the increased stability will always be there. I also ordered the BH-3 from Kirk, and, hopefully, both will be here by the weekend.
