I have A5017 and I have used it couple of times for outdoor shoots and it worked nice in urban environment. Only issue with flat legs, it is hard to sand bag (I know about Robert's special weights for this stand).

Will avenger A420 will be better as it is more like traditional light stand?

Anyone have picture of A420 folded?

Thanks in advance.

It's not that the legs are flat. It's that they're so low to the ground that a saddle bag can't hang and apply the weight.

Yup, that is what I meant, didn't put it the right way. Looks to me A420 will be better (more stable) as footprint is also larger compared to A5017. This will be used for AB800 and say max 5' octa, no boom.

Hey Bobby.

I think that if you're going to have a large modifier off axis then either having weight at the base of the A5017 or a stand with a larger foot print makes sense, but as you already know, stands with larger foot prints will just as easily tip in on themselves and need some extra weight.

The A420 should handle the saddle bags better.

I have the A420 and the A670 stands, the A670 have the same base as the A5017. Sand bags are for sure easier to use on the A420.

Paul, how does the stand looks when folded with the wheels?

Just got my A420 and it is joy to use. Much better than A5017, IMHO. It is lot more stable as tripod legs and much wider footprint. Can take lot more weight or bigger modifier without need to sand bag and sang bagging is easier. I used it outdoors in san jose downtown area yesterday evening and it was very easy to just roll AB800, medium SB and VML. I only used 10lb sand bag as it was quite windy. Stand show no flex or any chance of tipping etc. My A5017 in similar situations would have flipped couple of times.

The A5017 isn't a location stand at all. Glad you're liking the A420.

I know A5017 isn't for location but I did use it couple of times and this A420 is lot better than A5017. If it wasn't for the wifey I would pick another A420.:D If only I could change those casters for pneumatic wheels then I am all set.

You're lucky that you're shooting at wheel-friendly locations. Rarely, if ever, do I shoot at a location where wheels would work.
