I see wonderful pictures taken with Sigma 30 1.4 and then I see worrisome posts about it. I am very interested in selling my Tamron 17-50 and buying a Sigma 30 1.4. Do you think I should play this lottery? I'm very comfortable with this FL and most of my pictures from Tamron 17-50 have been around this FL. I think most of the time people complaining about focus issues with Sigma 30 1.4 are probably not taking into consideration the very shallow DOF when wide open.

Go for it! Didn't even think twice about buying this lens and I'm glad I pulled the trigger on it.

I was a little worried because of all the internet rumors when I recently ordered mine but it arrived with no issues at all. Focus is dead on.

:DI think the "Sigma Lottery" is way overblown by a rather small minority of people. I have yet to have an issue with Sigma ( and I can't say this about Canon). Go for it!

+1

I was a bit put off before I bought my 30 1.4 by the reports of focus issues, I've tried 3 30 1.4's (2 at stores, and my own), none had focus issues.

The SIgma lottery is made up and spread by those who read these forums and pass information along without any real experience of a lenses. I have many Sigma lenses and never had a problem with any of them.

I picked up a 30 1.4 from a POTN member....it is dead on and is (edit) now the sharpest lens I own. Do it. I am trying to keep myself from buying the 50 from Abe's while it is on sale.

I agree that a lot of people who owns Canon lens who never owned a Sigma will be biased because of what they hear from people who experienced Sigma lenses.

I have high respect with the Sigmalux and the new Sigma 85, those lens are awesome value for the price.

Having said that, I have yet to own each one that are sharp. I have bought the Sigmalux twice and failed getting a good copy. My friend owned both the 50 and 85 and both are perfect after I tried it on my camera. He sent them for calibration after he bought it, which I did not do. So its most likely that these lenses are really great, only that Sigma does not provide excellent quality assurance on each lens released.

I would say if I buy one, I would ask for replacement it if its not perfect. If replacement is still bad, I will contact Sigma for calibration.

I actually think it is just the opposite of this. It appears to me that Sigma's quality control is quite horrid. I think the reason that the issues are not stated even more broadly is that lots of the users that own these lenses do not how to test them and don't realize that they focusing or image problems.

I had no problem with the Sigma lenses I purchased back when I was shooting film on Nikon bodies. However, since switching to Canon in 2003 my personal experience with various Sigma lenses over the years is that I have not yet found a good one. I always end up returning them.

Maybe they were better back when the autofocus technology was all in the body or maybe I have just been really, really unlucky with Sigma since switching to Canon.
