Numbers? Links? Data on Sigma lenses? Because your statement is about as true as his.

just search my name and sigma chief. i have personal experience with the sigmalux.

nevermind my name, just search "sigma" on these boards. tons of people with hands on/personal experience.

I see wonderful pictures taken with Sigma 30 1.4 and then I see worrisome posts about it. I am very interested in selling my Tamron 17-50 and buying a Sigma 30 1.4. Do you think I should play this lottery? I'm very comfortable with this FL and most of my pictures from Tamron 17-50 have been around this FL. I think most of the time people complaining about focus issues with Sigma 30 1.4 are probably not taking into consideration the very shallow DOF when wide open.

God, you're a drama queen! There is no Sigma Lottery... you're an odds on favorite to get a great lens.

Hmmm, so many mixed replies! I think I will take my chances but I'm going to wait about a month 'cause I am going out of town next week and need "working" lenses! :) Thank you all for your feedbacks!

I dunno why people use the word "lottery"...
usually, to participate in a lottery, you spend a small amount of money, for a chance to win a large amout of money (i.e. $2 ticket to win $1,000,000)
In the "Sigma Lottery" examples, people spend $400 (or more) and hope to get a lens that is working properly (which I believe most do)... since I don't think anyone that wins $2 from a $2 ticket would say they won the lottery, I'm not sure what 'breaking even' is considered winning...

Shouldn't this be renamed to the Sigma Roulette???
You have a chance to lose, but mostly you'll be just fine...

Just like smoking, thinking too much about unnecessary things is bad for your health! ;)

Again..not all have problems and even if they did send it to sigma for calibration and you are good.

So lets say you buy a Sigma and are lucky enough to have it work perfectly. A few years pass and you upgrade to a new Canon body and it then doesn't work right. Can you send it back to Sigma to calibrate it to a future body? If so is it covered under warranty? If its out of warranty what would it cost? Or is this a matter of having it "rechipped"?

If I were to buy a Sigma 85mm I would want to be certain that I could use it for several bodies in the future.

See my earlier post in this thread regarding rechipping...

The obvious choice is switching to Nikon since those guys NEVER have problems.

I had 3 copies of the 30mm 1.4. Never got a decent copy so i baught a 35L. swore off sigma

tried the 85mm1.4. First copy was dead out of the box. Bad af motor. sent back in and waited 3 more weeks for another copy. Almost said screw em and baught an 85L........almost:p

the replacement 85mm1.4 is one of the best lens i have. Absolutly fantastic. We compared it stop for stop with my partners 85L, and it was as good or better than the 85L. It was also 1/2 the price on the 85L. My partner sold his 85L and got the sigma with same results.

We both cannot find any sigma 30mm 1.4 that will come close to what the canon 35L does

Also baught the sigma 105 macro and i am blown away with the results

My opinion on Sigma

Its a krapshoot. But you can get some good glass and save yourself a lot of $$$ if you are willing to test and go through the process. So far ive found a few that i would buy

85mm 1.4
105 macro
150 macro
50mm sigmulux

Thats about it for me with sigma but i think they are finaly starting to step up their game. In my opinion, sigma's 85 is better than the Canon.

Its a never ending battle. Some people swear by this lens, some say it is nothing but trouble. I agree with what most have said in this thread, it's an overblown issue.

I had a Sig 30 and Sig 50. My 30 was dead on, never had any issues, my 50 was a bit soft wide open and seemed to front focus, I sent it in for calibration and was happy with it after that. I really think some people are just too dramatic about this. If it was complete junk, Sigma would have gone out of business years ago. Bottom line, if it works, great. If not, send it in for calibration, Sigma has an excellent repair/service policy, their warranty is better than Canons.

On the other hand, save yourself the loss and just buy the 35L now:lol:, probably my favorite lens.

i played the lottery for a 30 and 50 and won both times :) both lenses are sharp and the focus is fast and accurate. i have a ef 85 f1.8 already otherwise i would probably get the sigma 85 f1.4 without hesitation.

Can you show the results? I understand it's half price.
