There is also a built-in OSX anti-malware tool, which now (since may's OSX security update) automatically updates malware definitions. You can toggle auto updates in System Prefs/Security/General/Automatically Update Safe Downloads List.

I've had Macs for 22 years. Never had any protection. Don't need it. But if you exchange files with PC users, then run some virus detection software to protect them.

Bingo! I had my local print supplier give me a virus when i dropped a memory stick into him, it was fine when i gave it to him, he copied the files off onto his Mac, got back to the office and Avast went nuts!

Whoa, I didnt mean to imply I wasnt on the internet. Oh no, def online! I just never open emails from people I dont know, never install random crap of websites, etc. Just be smart and youll be fine.

There is now malware that will run on a mac without asking for a password. The malware is often hidden in image files served up on google image searches.

See, for instance, https://discussions.apple.com …/3055248?start=0&tstart=0 (external link)

Seems like "security through obscurity" is a thing of the past.
