Great job!

Care to talk more about your coloring process? FCP? Color? Did you do any grading?

On the shooting part, there's a few shots of the vocals dude with a reflector (i think), that is way too hot.

But it's pretty solid.

From the outside looking in, you can’t understand it. From the inside looking out, you can’t explain it.

anyone ever find out if the bug has been fixed that allows cinestyle's LUT to be used in premiere pro?

Edit: nevermind, finally installed the cs5.5 update and seemed to fix the issue with LUT buddy. My new question is how re-incorporating the LUT table interfaces with your workflow

That is, I get that the LUT table essentially adds back in and converts it back to rec709, but doesn't that defeat the purpose of recording super flat anyways? Do you just continue to grade as you would once the LUT table has been added in?

I edited this on FCP and color on Apple Color ... with CineStyle ... it's extremely easy to color correct the footages.
Yes i kinda over used the reflector .... we shoot the vid at noon so it was pretty harsh lighting.

Song aside, the video was well shot. A couple things I would have done differently was:

1. The hot reflector (previously mentioned)
2. I think the camping chair was a poor choice in props... something better could have been found.
3. Some of the movement was a bit bouncy from you walking.

Overall I think it turned out really good and you should be proud of it.

LUT buddy works fine for me in Premiere Pro CS5. The purpose of the LUT table is to bring back the contrast that was sacrificed in order to gain more latitude. The superflat look of cinestyle and other similar picture styles is to capture as much detail as possible during intake. Using the LUT is not essential, since proper color correction will likely restore contrast anyway. It's just a great starting point for many since Technicolor already has calculated how much contrast was lost and restores it for you. You continue to grade as normal once LUT is applied, but the difference is you theoretically have a better image than if you had recorded it with standard or even neutral picture style.

jakele_x :

good video. The only thing I would change is to me, it is a little too flat. The purpose of using a picture style like cinestyle is to have more range to create contrast without losing detail in your shadows. In typical picture styles one is usually forced to choose between clipping blacks or ignoring the noise in the shadow areas. Anyway, look forward to seeing more of your projects.

ahhhhhh ok. So once the LUT is applied, say I wanted to bring up the shadows more....

Since I had used cinestyle and the LUT originally I would have less noise etc. bringing up the shadows versus shooting in another picture style?

(sorry for the horrible wording, going on 36 hours no sleep)

gibsonla..no worries. I don't sleep much either. yes, you should be able to get a cleaner high contrast image by using cinestyle and the LUT (or just applying a proper S curve in your tool of choice) than shooting in the standard Canon picture styles. It's not a one size fits all approach, but I have to say that the LUT gave decent results to most of the footage I have applied it too. If you don't like the look, you can always scrap the LUT and manually restore the contrast. In any case you will have more latitude to work with.

Yah, I use magic bullet looks. Seems like I have more latitude to restore it closer to what I want when I just play with the curves/contrast myself as opposed to using the LUT table.

I have been going back and forth as to whether to get magic bullet. I hear it's a great product, but I worry about my stuff looking too much like everyone else's. I currently use Color Finesse in After Effects (A highly underrated tool imo).

Well, I don't actually use any of the preset "looks" - I'm not really a fan of too many of them anyways

I use all the built-in tools that MBL offers to create my own look. I think that's where the true power of the program lies.

awesome. I think presets have their place. I certainly use them when there is no point in reinventing the wheel. I think color grading should be very individual and varied in the same way each story you are trying to tell is.

Depends on what software you are using. Some have the ability to simply import LUT. Others require third-party software. For Adobe users LUT buddy is a free solution from red giant software.
