As an avid G user this blows my mind. I would LOVE to "play" with one. Does anyone have or ever used this camera?

Also, I apologize if I am in the wrong forum but it was listed as a P&S (compact) in this Thread: (see comment by joeshot & MikeFairbanks)

That $7,000 Leica is a full-frame model plus it will take the finest Leitz Elmer or whatever $ 2,000 Leica lens. Will the G12 do that?
For WWW posted images and 4x6 prints I doubt if much difference may be detected if shot at a low ISO and with, say, f5.6 or f8. For large prints I would expect the Leica full frame to greatly outperform the G12.
Every camera is a compromise ...size, coat, performance, etc. and in most cases it is best to determine one's needs and budget then decide on what tool will do the job within those parameters.

Yes, I would consider trading my G12 for that Leica.

G12 'just another P&S'' from Canon ;)

Most people I know who run companies would enjoy iFail's profit margins. Technology isn't always about the hardware.

I'm a has-been Leica shooter. Favourite camera of all time? Leica M3. I could only afford 2 lenses--50/2.0 and 90/2.8. Camera was stolen from my car after an accident. This camera improved my workflow, so that I got images that were excellent, where I couldn't get them with previous cameras. (Pentax SpotmaticII) Then I bought an M4P. Two lenses. The same, but more modern versions. I hated the M4P, even though I put a Leica power winder on it. Point is--Leica land is hallowed ground, but choose the right rig for you.
Fast forward...I bought a G9 after reading an article at Luminous Landscape about a photographer's journed to Japan. He took a G9 and Leica M8; left the M8 in his room and shot almost exclusively with the G9 and Franiec grip. So--for me--G9 and Richard Franiec's grip. What an excellent camera! Great for street photography, and the lens was an extended zoom that opened up possibilities.

Your post caught my eye. Canon and Leica both make excellent cameras.

Perhaps you should consider the new Fuji X100 vs the M9? More realistic budget.

I have/used a Leica 11f , with a 50 mm collapsible F 3.5 50 Elmar since '82. I've extensively used a Leica M4 and a 35, 50 and 90mm lenses extensively.

I've got a G12.

Also Pentax slr/dslr (s), Mamiya medium format system, Zeiss Ikon, etc.

The Leica's are extremely well built. The G12, well built for a small advance compact camera. I don't call the G 12 a point and shoot...it's an advanced compact.

Pix quality...G 12 very good....Leica...excellent.

Cost...G 12, not cheap...Leica...can be out of this world.

You can't compare a G12 with a Leica Rangefinder. Different as apples and oranges.

Although having said that, I bought my G12 as a daily carry around to replace my Leica RF 35 mm in that task. I wanted to go digital.

Back in the '80's, I did some non scientific comparisons between a Leica M4 and a Pentax slr, an ES 11...same subject, same time blew up to 8 X 10's.

I used Pentax Takumar lenses. In my view i thought at 8 X 10 it was a toss up between the two makes. Zap it up to larger size prints...well I don't know. Probably the Leica.

I think there are exceptional cameras out there on the market that I would eventually like to own.

In no particular order:

Canon 5D Mk 11- a great camera, full sensor, video..capable, capable, capable.

Pentax K5...some (I do) think this might be the best cropped sensor DSLR out there currently and it is built like a tank.

Leica M9. As a long time Leica owner....I do love the unapproachable quality...the Rolex of cameras. I have used an M9....I want one.
