I have been thinking about purchasing a Deep Octa for Strobist work as well as in my studio (when I get to having one) for use with flash units or my Alien Bees 400 with the vagabond Mini. I like the results from many of the pictures I have seen on this an other sections of this forum.

In reading through this forum it seems as if the SP Studio Systems might be a valid alternative. With an inexpensive adapter it seems to work well with Alien Bees and I understand I can use the bracket from my Cheetah 24 to adapt it to my speedlight.

Any new thought from any of you on this product? Anyone use it with a strobe on a Kacey pole adapter to carry around?

Just looking for an update on users thoughts before I put down my money. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Jim

It's an excellent modifier, Jim, but would probably be pretty unwieldy aloft on a pole. It's *very* deep and heavier than an Elinchrom DO:

I have an old photo that might give you some sense of its size:

The collapsible SP softboxes/octaboxes are very sturdily built. All of the internal ribs and struts are doubled-up:

No grids available but the front baffle is well recessed from the leading edge of the fabric. Notice where the narrow white Velcro strip is attached:

I can recommend these SP EZ collapsible softboxes very highly but would question how well the big 37" octa would work on top of a painter's pole. It might work very well; I just have no first hand experience.

I would get a long pole so you can put one end on the ground. Makes it much easier than having the pole end on your waist level.

Thanks for the comments. Deep is OK but heavy maybe not. Of course I can't find the weight listed for either of them.

If the 37 might be unwieldy has anyone tried the 28? I understand that that it is also deep and should have a similar light pattern.

I just weighed my 37" octa for you, Jim. Without the nylon carry bag, it weighs 2 lbs 8 oz.

This is the 27" square on a bracket:

I knew someone would ask that. I'll weigh mine tomorrow if no one else beats me to it.

Okay, I weighed my DO this morning. Incredibly (and surprisingly), it weighs *exactly* the same as the 37" SP Studio Systems octa: 2 lbs 8 oz.

Dave,

Thank you very much for taking the time to weigh the two softboxes. Probably going to give the SP 37" DO a try.

Very interesting - I think I will buy this but before I do an alternative I have been considering is the Kacey 22" Beauty Dish. Anyone know what that the weight for that is?

Sorry to confuse the issue. I'm looking for a better alternative for outside shooting and these two options seem to be great for different reasons.

Anyone know the relative weights of the DO options versus the Kacey Beauty Dish? We now know the DO options are the same weight as each other - 2 lbs 8 oz. Is the beauty dish lighter?

Wish I had a precise scale to weight my kacey dish. To me all the modifiers are pretty light weight IMHO where having them on the pole is not that big of a deal. Like I said earlier get the longer pole with one end on the ground.
