Anyone have any experience with the Think Tank ultrlight series? I want to take my 500 f4 to Kruger shortly and dont have a decent bag for the 500 (just a cheap rucksack I use in the forest) and want it better protected than the flimsy nylon I have for it now. My Vertex 100 has been a legend but the 200 is a little heavy and South African Airways can be a bit touchy with heavy hand luggage (they know we are going there for one thing ;) ).

Was looking at http://www.naturescapes.net …ort-ultra-light-v2.0.html (external link) version 2.5 is now 1.1 KG with no accessories.

Neil, below is what a friend of mine uses for travel and in the field:

Even this one below will fit the 500/f4 IS with the internal compartments re-arranged:

Problem is it is not a lightweight but very well padded. Tough to find a lightweight bag so you might just have to settle for the ThinkTank you listed.

Regards, ;)

I use lowepro Trekker 600 as shown above to. I have several of them for the 500, 800, 400 2.8..... Also use a ThinkTank Glass Taxi on occasion. 500 will just fit in there with hood reversed and no camera mounted. Camera body will fit in the side of the bag. Not a lot of padding but something smaller to carry.

Actually padding is over rated. It keeps scratches off it (which is nice) but still the lenses are a lot tougher than people give them credit for

I bought the Kinesis L511 compact long case, it holds the 500 with hood reversed + a body. Seems very nice so far. You probably would want to look into getting the straps so you can wear it as a backpack though, and getting the "donut" that keeps the camera body from sloshing around too much in there.

It looks like a nice bag also and it does come with one shoulder strap:

Cheers. I will be carrying 2 bodies and laptop too (netbook) so not sure the Kinesis is totally right. Thanks for the replies!!

Lowepro runner looks good but it a touch heavy. OK, will probably go with think tank!

Cheers guys.

Not to be contradictory, but having just sold my Lowepro 450 when I bought my 500, I would not recommend it for a 500. I couldn't get it to fit length-wise for one and, if you got it in there, you wouldn't have room for anything else.

I use a Tenba Shootout - Large and have been pleased with it.

Right. The Airport ultralight 2.5 arrived yesterday. My first was "Sh00t, it is too small!" but it is just a touch narrow. The 500 fits nicely to one side and leaves space for 2 bodies and a lens...plus other bits n bobs...laptop goes in front pocket. Should work out nicely!

I think this is a great bag for it. It is very small yet holds more than just the lens. It's also made to fit in the the Pelican 1510, which is carry on friendly for most airlines.
