Wood Duck Update + ID help needed.

The babies are getting so big! I can't wait to see their colors come in. She only has three now so it appears four of the seven original ducklings did not make it.

Unfortunately I am yet to get a shot at this location that I consider acceptable quality. This is most likely due to the time of day I go and the fact I don't really have enough "length." These shots are pretty heavily cropped.

Also I noticed another set of babies which have no adult present and I was wondering if someone could ID them? Are they mallard ducklings? They don't really match the pictures I've seen. I actually went through the waterfowl section of a West Virginia bird guide composed by WVU grad students and am still clueless.

Thanks! The pics I've seen of young mergansers, have pretty distinct markings though. The bill shape is definitely similar. Time may be the only tell. Can't wait to see them grow either. I've honestly never seen a common Merganser in person but I know they're native here.
