Forbidden Promise

A metaphor in imagery with the sailboat representing a promise promise and static field an indication of an uncompromising conflict generating forbidden access to attainment of the promise. The image was captured on a 5x7 sheet of B/W film.

OK Critique away this should be interesting. Feel free to express what ever strikes you.

I'd like to see both images separate. For me the foreground image is a little distracting. I can't really tell what it is I'm looking at.

There is a single image here. The foreground is chemistry effect on the negative. The foreground reflects the notion of "forbidden" or "inaccessible".

Im looking at the picture and thinking that you just got hit by a wave...am I right? If so, did your camera survive this ordeal?

Not at all this image was shot with a long lens (480mm) on a 5x7 camera and I am standing on the sidewalk shooting into a bank of rock which is the foreground. The white effect is where chemistry stains in the darkroom from bad processing (this is a reject neg which I resurrected based on theme) produced dark streaks which became white with inversion. The effect is not a function of the scene.

The sailboat represents the promise of a better future, endless fulfillment, etc, while the shattering of that promise is found in a caveat of activity that keeps this future from occurring; debt, obligation, depression, incapability, etc.

Hmmm, looks like someone just can't stand to throw away a bad shot/processing.

It may be a lot more readily accepted in the artsy crowd but I'm too much of realist. Perhaps if there was more color involved....

I find the literal to be relatively boring even when it is done well. That said there is a fair amount of literal interpretation that excels but usually there accompanies a presentation that is not literal or cliche. In other words there must be a strong pull of visual mystery and interest for me. The volume of ordinary and redundant images in existence is legendary. Now that doesn't mean there is a lack of usefulness but perhaps this effect has run it's course in my lifetime.

In terms of color this is a B/W neg that is toned to produce a slightly ethereal look. Sort of a selenium cyanotype digital hybrid tone.

Oh really? I really respect your vision for art. For me though I'd really like to see the photo with just the whats in the background. Rock, water, sailboat etc..

There are likely some images from this shoot that are purely literal. They are not as interesting to me for simple reasons.

I need about 3 good mental turns in visual contrast to be drawn to a photograph.

Here we have 1) a scenic on the water with a visible subject the rocks, waves, and sailboat, 2) a reduction in color and luminosity, and 3) a naturally occurring process texture. This is the most unique negative in that shoot which is why it made it to the surface of my work. There must be something of value for me. 90% of my effort hits the dumpster. This image has a special place for me.

The 3 visual contrasts are 1) the scenic; a beach with wind surfers, 2) the light with sunshine in the foreground and an ominous background, and 3) the orientation of the surfers suggesting the nearly complete cycle of the wind surfers journey in 4 individuals with different color wind surfboards.

A vast majority of photography features 1-2 visual contrasts. Some images have more than 3 but I find 3 to be the point of when my interest kicks in. Note the 3 contrasts may be dramatic or subtle.

So what element in the photo represents "forbidden"?

A sailboat that far off shore represents to me more like hopelessness, rather than promise. If I were stranded on the shore, I'm not going to be expecting that sailboat to be coming to rescue me. I'm going to wait for a larger vessel. If I were on the boat itself, perhaps I could imagine spotting land and believing that I have a promise of making it to shore, but unbeknown to me are the rocky obstacles that await. But then, for that to be portrayed why is the image being shown from the perspective of the person on the shore?

Also... for my taste, I barely noticed the sailboat.

maybe it's the next $39 million photo, it's not the quality of the photo, it's how you sell it. I'm pretty sure someone will get what you are trying to achieve but then again, it also strike me as a failed attempt and being rescued with metaphor and big words to cover its boringness.

Great observations Nathan ... I am viewing the sailboat as a remote but possible promise of the good life but the veil of circumstance, obligation, and uncertainty prevent me from reaching through the veil and acquiring the promise. Much like the concept of the American dream. The analogy is a young persons big dreams of achievement obliterated by the much larger reality of the journey and circumstance that provides an influential force on these dreams. In essence this could be the dream mate that will never happen, the stature of public recognition that will never arise, financial fortunes never to be achieved, freedom exchanged for a life in prison.
