I recently purchased a used 450D camera and so far I just love it. The kit lens that came with it does not have the image stabilization and I want to upgrade to that. My question is: What is the difference between the 18-55 IS and the 18-55 IS II??

The only difference is cosmetic, the optics are the same. Get which ever one that you can find the best deal on. Used ones are allway's poping up here and on Fred Miranda.

6D, 5D, 7Dii, Eos R and too many lenses, flashes and aux. gear to list!

The 450 originally came with the IS version...or so I thought...how did you get stuck with a non-IS?

Thats what came with the camera. I was not knowledgeable enough at the time to know whether it should come with an IS one or not.

Check your box...check your receipt to see if you received what in fact you bought..

I dont think this is accurate. When the IS version of the lens came out there were tests that indicated that it was sharper. The original non IS lens was a bit of a turkey.

There was a non is which was supposed to be a bit crap, then an IS which is supposedly much sharper than the non IS, then an IS mk2. So 3 lenses altogether. Not sure what the difference is between the IS and IS mk2.

I was comparing the 2 is versions, not the non is version which is inferior.

The IS makes a difference. At 55mm on a crop camera it's actually telephoto, which means it will magnify the shaking.

When purchasing a 18-55 IS, take your time. Don't spend too much.

Thank you. bw!

The Mark II of 18-55mm is the IS version. Mark 1 is the non-IS version.

So, 18-55mm IS is the same as 18-55mm IS II.

No part of this is correct.

None of the 18-55 (Mk I), 18-55 Mk II, with or without USM, or the new 18-55 Mk III have IS.

The 18-55 IS (Mk I) and 18-55 IS Mk II, as their names suggest, do.

The 18-55s, except the Mk III have a relatively poor optical system.
The 18-55 ISs and the 18-55 Mk III have a newer, much better one.

Differences between the Mk I and Mk II of each lens are minimal, essentially cosmetic.
The difference between the 18-55 Mk I or Mk II and the Mk III is very significant as the optics are different, as stated above.

I bought the camera off Ebay. Did not know anything about IS or non IS at the time. This is my first DSLR and I have a lot of learning to do.
