I recently purchased a used 450D camera and so far I just love it. The kit lens that came with it does not have the image stabilization and I want to upgrade to that. My question is: What is the difference between the 18-55 IS and the 18-55 IS II??

Optics exactly the same. Only a few very minor cosmetic differences between the two models.

I bought the camera off Ebay. Did not know anything about IS or non IS at the time. This is my first DSLR and I have a lot of learning to do.

Still...compare the photo and description of the item to what you got...if it's within 45 days you can file a claim...

Its actually been over 60 days. I just have to chock this up to my own lack of knowledge of the lens :-)

The whole 18-55 IS vs. all the other versions is pissing me off. I'm going to somehow round up all 3 and review them.

This happened once with the whole "****ty kit lens on a pro body vs. consumer body with L glass" comparison and the L glass/consumer combo was a lot sharper than the 5D/kit lens combo.

.

OK, do that. I think you will find the last two versions of the 18-55IS are pretty much the same

I think so too, other than normal slight variance from copy to copy.

3? Which 3? There are at least 7 that I can think of:
18-55
18-55 USM (for Japanese domestic market)
18-55 II
18-55 USM II (for Japanese domestic market)
18-55 III
18-55 IS
18-55 IS II

I don't know if there is an 18-55 USM III, but it seems unlikely if the rationale for the non-IS Mk III lens was to keep it as cheap as possible.

I'v got multiple copies of most of these apart from the IS II and the USM II, the 18-55 I found was SLOOOWWW in focusing, maybe it was that copy but I'v only seen 1 or 2 of them.

You are correct except that there are also "Made In Japan" and Made In Taiwan" versions of some of the 18-55's. As far as I know, the country of manufacture should make no difference to the actual lens other than the external markings.

For example, there seems to be THREE versions of the 18-55mm IS (MK I) available.

One version has "MADE IN JAPAN" on the front of the lens and was usually seen with the XSi/450D or bought separately on it's own.

The other two have only "CANON INC" on the front, but have either "Made in Japan", or "Made In Taiwan" molded into the rear mount. These seem to show up with the XS/1000D or T1i/500D and newer cameras.
