Can you use the digital zoom function with still photos?

No only video
you can crop them in post but of course that will degrade the quality

Thanks for the answer. Yeah, the "digital zoom" is essentially an in-camera crop.

Just curious (I have a T2i)... Why not still photos as well?

I know about the loss of IQ, but from my P&S days, a certain amount of digital zoom can work in some situations such as landscapes in moody early morning light.
