Hello Everyone,

Knowing that UV Filters do degrade IQ, do you still use one? We have all spent a lot of money on filters, and now, I am starting to decide to take off all of my filters off all of my lenses...

thoughts?

Nope. Rigid lens hood for each lens, though; the couple, pricey UV filters I bought originally just sit on the shelf now.

Some lenses are only sealed with filters. And I have had lens cap come off in the bag so, yeah I keep them on. There isn't enough difference to take it off for at the moment.

Not here but I do frequently have a CPL or Variable ND "filter" on the lens.

I don't use them unless I'm around blowing sand or spray.

my hoya pro 1 digital mrc and b+w f-pro mrc do not "degrade" IQ. at least as far as i can tell. and i like having that added protection against dust and whatever filth it's exposed to even w/ the hoods on.

Having joined this forum 3 years ago, I hope you're not still expecting some kind of consensus on this.

I use filters mainly for the peace of mind they provide me with (being a long time sufferer of lens related OCD). A flat, easily accessible surface is easier to clean than a curved, recessed one. Since I don't print 20*30" size prints, any IQ degradation is basically negligable. Then again, I avoid checking for IQ differences with and without filters. The pixel-peeper in me prefers being ignorant to any perceivable drop in IQ caused by the filters.

Yes because I've done tests and shot numerous photos with and without filters and have never noticed any degradation of IQ. Since the degradation is not noticeable to the naked eye, I'm not going to concern myself with it.

I don't use them anymore. I tried uncoated, single coated, and multi coated UV filters from Marumi, Kenko, and Hoya. I took pictures with filter on and off and I notice slight loss of contrast and minor ghosting. Since I'm not good at PP, I'd rather make sure I get it right in the camera.
Just sharing. :)

Cheers! :D

I put a filter on when shooting in the rain or snow on lenses that require a filter to complete the weatherseal.

Otherwise I do not use UV filters. Only polarizing or ND.
