Hey guys,

Need your experience based advice on something...
I am going to Iceland to shoot a music documentary / travel...

I will be at a festival to begin with and will be using my 1D Mark IV to shoot some video for the documentary. i currently do not have any close up range lens and was looking in to various places for a nice lens that will take some good video in close range!

A friend of mine is selling a 17-40mm f4 lense for under £400 (shop price new £600)

was wondering having the fact that its F4 will it be an issue for videography at night? because obviously i need it to see what i am shooting but if its going to be not good with small apature then this wont be any good to me. 16-35mm is a nice lens 2.8 but its a bit over my price range :(

so please suggest. i was also looking at Sigma 12-24mm

so whats your take on this? .....

Thanks
Asif

i dont think it would be useful for night videos, you'll be needing high ISO and the quality might suffer

Yeah forget it. Unless if you can get one of those LED video lights.

Yeah, f/4.0 is too slow, you need prime lens (f/1.4 or 1.8) and crank ISO up to 1600 for night videos.

Yeah, definitely primes for night videos. Generally speaking, the faster the better. But if you're looking for reasonably priced options consider the 50 1.4 or 28 1.8. There are also a ton of fast, manual focus lenses that would be great options - I'm not a very good person to advise you on those, but if you search the forums, you'll find a lot of info about them.
