I've been reading all the threads in here for weeks, and trying to figure out how to move up from Blogger and SmugMug for my web presence.

I ended up with my hosting at hostgator.com, and decided to go with WordPress to start my adventure. Even then, I was so confused. Then, I read R.C. Concepcion's book "Get Your Photography on the Web," and it all clicked. In less than a couple hours, I had my first WordPress blog up and running.

This includes adding a few plugins - L/RBlog to add photos straight from Lightroom, Simple Viewer Pro to add gallery slideshows (using the web module in Lightroom), and Shadowbox for displaying images and galleries. So MUCH more flexible than Blogger.

The point of this post is, if I can do it, anyone can!

Good stuff. A few years ago when I tried playing around with the earlier WP1 and then a bit of 2, I tried as much as I could and simply gave up because there was too much work. Instead I stuck with good 'ol notepad and hand coding as it was simple, I controlled structure and I could design my own layouts.

Now I'm back... it's WP 3 now and there's so MUCH to choose from. There plenty of free themes for starters and was surprised to see so many readily available frameworks. I've lunged toward thematic now and at first I was well beyond confused (but mainly coz I was trying to figure out thematic using a pre-made child theme), but just last night I figured everything out and I'm now developing a custom site using WP.

It really is fantastic to use as a CMS and regardless of whether you're not familiar with any html or are a supr coder, you can use WP and make your site look good.
