this should be a topic already discussed but i don't know what search word to use for this ...

which one is sharper?
Canon 50mm 1.8 II vs Sigma 50mm 1.4
@ 1.8, 2.0, 2.2

my 1.8 II is razor at 2.8 and above ... but i just thought that it might be time for an upgrade (since i'd prefer to shoot at 1.8, otherwise, i'd use a zoom for 2.8)

I would hope that at what? $300-$350 more it would be sharper. More equal comparison would be the canon 1.4 vs sigma 1.4

yeah, i was hoping for:

1) links to comparisons/head to head
2) personal experience between both
3) pictures of comparison shots (pixel peep)

The F/1.8 sharpness is quite alright stopped down a bit, but then the bokeh goes down the drain IMO and the OOF highlights look pretty bad. It's a real pity Canon didn't release a version more like the F/1.8 Mk1 and with more aperture blades for a price somewhere between the current F/1.8 and F/1.4.

There's no need for examples when there's the collective agreement that the Sigma is much better. The nifty fifty is nifty but it's not Sigma 50 nifty. I've owned both and it's no comparison.

yes, for the price it SHOULD be better.

but how "much" better? visible even when not pixel peeping? night and day?

Try the ultimate pixel-peeping website: http://www.the-digital-picture.com …omp=0&FLIComp=0&APIComp=2 (external link)

According to their copies, sharper and less vignetting at F/1.4 than the Canon at F/1.8, and certainly better at F/1.8 too.

I've used both - they are similar at f/1.8, I personally think 50 f/1.8 II is sharper but of course, the latter's AF is unusable

Photozone.de results have the 50 f/1.8 having better corner sharpness at all times in comparison to the Sigma 1.4, but the Sigma has way better center sharpness in the f/1.8-f/2.8 range, and in my experience center sharpness is considerably more important for most types of photography that 50mm lenses tend to get used for.

This matches my personal experience with these two lenses btw..

the only catch with the sigma 1.4 i can see is the size.
on one hand, i actually bring the plastic fantastic because of it's minute size ...
on the other, i'm starting to like the focal length (not too wide, not too long) as an all around lens.

i actually skip my 35L because of it's length. if i'm bringing a big/long lens, it's going to be for portraiture. the 7D+35L combo don't give me as much high ISO range as i would like (i don't know how to do NR, and SOOC, i consider the 7D to be one stop grainier than the 5D2)

I have to agree...I'll give up corner sharpness for centre sharpness on something like a 50 prime and be very happy about it haha
