If you don't mind me asking, how much did they say the calibration service would cost?

If it is still under warranty, it is free. Otherwise contact Sigma for an estimate.

It was under warranty so didn't cost anything. They called today saying something needed to be replaced and then they calibrated it.

After reading countless threads about Sigma and Tamron issues, maybe folks should just pony up the extra dollars and buy red rings. At least then there will be satisfaction knowing other photograpers will notice the bright red ring, and make any other potential issues go away. Not to say the OP doesn't have a legitimate gripe, but I would like to see some real world examples.

Even the red ringed Canon lenses have focus issues...

Did you send a body with it or just the lens?

My Sigma 30mm f1.4 fails battery tests like crazy yet has a 95% keeper rate in the real world. It almost never misses candids, portraits and low light shots - which is what I bought it for. It sucks at battery lines, but luckily that is not a subject I shoot often.

Same here. When I first got it, I squeezed off dozens of shots of the grandkids and winter street-life photos, nary a concern. When I read about all the gripping, I started shooting batteries and test charts and I had myself convinced it was misfocusing. But then I'd go shoot with it some more and it was dead-balls on.

No way. All focus errors with L glass MUST be user error. Just like all focus errors with Sigma must be miscalibration.

But, but, but it has a Red Ring around the end of it.

Red ring focus errors are most likely attributed to using Canon cameras with either 2 or three digits in the model number.

Just the lens. I have a wedding coming up so I wasn't able to send the body in. They have cameras there to calibrate them to but there is variation within cameras so i'll micro adjust if necessary when I get it back.

Are Sigmas really this bad as people seem to make them? I have gone to camera stores and have tested numerous Sigma (50 1.4, 70-200 2.8 II) new and used, and they all seemed great. They all focused really fast and the 50 1.4 was comparable to the 1.2L (from my tests).

No wonder people assume all Sigma lenses are crap. Because people like you post threads with a title like "another unhappy Sigma user" even though it sounds like your lens is performing pretty much as it should.

Yeah, it's genius.

It's true, I read it on the internet.

cheers, juice (Canon shooter, Elinchrom lighter, but pretty much agnostic on brands.)

All of my Sigma's have been spot on out of the box; I can't say that about all of my lenses (yes including Canon).:p

Well, Did you immediately do a focus test TRYING to find a problem or did you actually USE the lens?

Not trying to be mean, But a lot of people grab a lens and go and do focus tests, trying to FIND a problem instead of going out, using it, and seeing if they actually SEE a problem with the lens, Sometimes just shooting it a bit will tell you if somethings off...

what is wrong with doing a calibration test right away when it's still easy to exchange and you have a body that has no micro-focus adjust?

im at work atm so will have to post the pic later.

Basically out of all 5 batteries, middle one is def sharpest, followed by the one directly in front, then the one behind. I have to stress the fact that the one in front seems to be always clearer than the one directly behind.

The two outmost batteries are about the same (most blurred).

So calibration needed?

did you focus it on the middle one?

it might be front focusing a trace if the one in front is always sharper than the one in back

it could also be your 60D that is off a touch

Because you could also take the thing and screw around taking random pictures with it first and see how you like it..

if you notice problems then you can go ahead and do a focus test

It just irritates me because a lot of people seem to buy a sigma and IMMEDIATELY stick it on a bench and test it because they expect to find a problem...
